Advanced Psychiatric Directive Questions

Postby guest » Wed Jul 06, 2005 4:05 am

I am preparing an Advanced Psychiatric Directive that I got from the Bazelon Center. In it, it asks if I would prefer any alternatives to hospitalization. I didn't know there were any. What are they? I'd like to know. Secondly, I am wondering if an advanced psychiatric directive can override Assisted Outpatient Treatment (forced drugging)? Any help would be great. Shrink resistant, I would like to hear from you in particular. You have the right perspective on the antipsychiatry movement.

I use exercise, self-help groups, and cognitive therapy; but no meds for my bipolar illness.

Psychiatric advance directives are legal documents used by persons currently enjoying legal capacity to declare their preferences and instructions for future mental health treatment, or to appoint a surrogate decision maker through Health Care Power of Attorney (HCPA), in advance of being targeted by coercive mental health laws, during which they may be stripped of legal capacity to make decisions.

The inpatient psych thing will never happen to me again but if I end up in an old age home someday I don't want Haldol or any crap like that for so called 'agitation'. You do need to plan in advance for these things.

I just found this http://www.mindfreedom.org/kb/mental-health-advocacy/advance-directives/dialogue-about-value-about-psychiatric-advanced-directives

You all know how to do a net search.

This thread is 12 years old, its was sleeping for a quite a wile. 2005 I was really screwed the hell up thanks to psychiatry. Would have been nice to have found this forum back then when I was taking 4 different pills that we destroying me to make me 'better'. 2009 I learned the truth about psychiatry.
I survived psychiatry.

This is a great idea. I recently printed out a mental health care advanced directive and got it notarized. I'm not sure how effective it will be but I feel it is worth a try. I made it clear I don't want any psychiatric medications and I don't want ECT.

I should do one of these, if I was ever to be confronted by psychiatry again it would only be for only one reason, drinking alcohol.

Give me a Ativan all day then some Seroquel 25Mg to get hungry eat and go to sleep. No damn add on labels "dual diagnosis" for insurance fraud, I will have none of that BS.

Unlikely I would ever need an advanced directive before old age and the possibility of senile dementia or Alzheimers but better safe then sorry.

A bad nervous breakdown plus lots of alcohol has not happened in many many years but anything is possible I guess. I think listing acceptable drugs would make it more likely the directive would be followed and besides doing alcohol withdrawal drug free sucks anyway.

Am also thinking the directive should be put online where I can find it from any internet connection or direct others too, it won't do any good if its home someplace and I am stuck in a psychiatric hellhole and can't get to it.

It would be good to upload mine to someplace like this in case they catch me outside dishevelled and in a delusional state...

Personally, I think everyone should consider having one. No one is immune to being falsely committed by a corrupt hospital. There are psychiatric hospitals who commit anyone and will do anything to fill empty beds if that can bring in money. And even if an institution has the best intentions, they aren't perfect at determining who needs treatment and who does not:

OMG! I had never hard of the Rosenhan experimnt before, that really shows how subjective and unscientific psychiatry really is. And yet they still have the power and authority to take away our freedom and force us to take drugs which damage our health. It is not fair.
