Caffeine

Postby january » Mon Jul 04, 2005 9:43 am

I've been reading about all of these people who are getting fired for comments they make online... I figured it'd be fun. I work at a coffee shop, and now I'm going to talk about how evil it is.

LINK!

Basically, I've got people, some of them in high school, coming to me and getting 2, 3, 6! shots of espresso a day. And we find little ways to dress them up so they taste like candy and people don't realize they're getting addicted. And the stuff in them is horrible. Cow milk and sugar.

I'm not completely anti-coffee, don't get me wrong, it's just so bizarre to me that our whole culture is dependant on it. I love the art behind espresso. I love being a barista. But I feel guilt.

It also is this line I really want to cross with the people who buy DOUBLE SHOT MOCHAS FOR THEIR CHIDREN!!!! I obviously cannot tell them, "Um, do you really think that's appropriate for an 8 year old?" (Especially when we have non-caffeinated alternatives)

I don't know, I'm sleepy, this doesn't make any sense.

Just wondering what ya'll think.

By the way, after reading that article, I understand why a good chunk of my regulars are tightly wound assholes!

And I had my own doctor tell me to not take caffeine. For this very reason.

Caffeine sounds like scary stuff :shock:.
It should be banned so that chilrdren can't be corrupted by this dangerous drug!
Personally I'd recomend a good single-malt whisky as an alternative :twisted: :lol: !

I'm not interested in the government making up for bad parenting.

I'd just like some awareness about the dangers. Especially in children.

Everything that you eat, drink, sniff, smoke, inject or however else you get it into your body is potentially dangerous.
Drink too much water and you can die!
Inhale too much oxygen and you can die!
The type of poison is irrelevant, what kills you is the dose. :lol:

Don't forget the world itself. Everything is causing illnesses these days, cancers etc... just the air we breathe is making people ill... all the pollution etc.

Yes and no; certain substances are more problematic than others. Caffiene is addictive, which doesn't help.

I wouldn't say the type is irrelevant, although yes, the dose is a significant factor. The type, however, effects which dose is fatal, which has long term side effects, and which is okay.

Being educated in all of the above, is helpful, if you have an interest in keeping your body clear of the more dangerous stuff.

I really hate that excuse. "Well everything can kill you if you inject/breathe/eat/smoke/###$ too much of it."

It's a pathetic cop-out and a bad attempt at trying to sound like an intellectual.

By your logic, we should legalize meth. Since you know, anything can kill you.

:roll:

Caffeine is baaad. And it's not like, it's totally bad and should be banned, but the public should really undertsand what it's doing to itself. I'm all for personal responsibility, but I also know that most of the general public are... well... stupid. And they will fail to connect the dots between some issues and their 3 daily quad hazelnut lattes. It would be nice if somebody could like, do a special on the dangers of caffeine.

The sellers of this are just as responsible for making people aware.

Let's look at our other legal drugs. Alcohol: alcohol manufacturers must compliment their products and advertising with a host of warnings. They have to contribute to treatment for alcoholism. Most bars have warning signs about drinking and driving, alcohol and pregancy, and have those: Are you an alcohoic? pamphlets.

Why aren't Starbucks and other coffee shops held to some standard of informing the general populace about the dangers of their product?

I am seriously going to quit my job. I have to serve children and pregnant women a potentially dangerous chemical, while they are completely unaware of the possibe dangers. It's a violation of their rights for me to refuse to serve them, but I think if they knew the dangers, they wouldn't consume.

Sorry about my rant. I felt the same way when I found out it's against the law to refuse to serve alcohol to a pregnant woman.

I enjoy my coffee personally, but I don't drink alot of it.

Certain people I agree shouldn't be drinking the stuff, children and pregnant women (women who breast feed etc)

According to the DSM IV coffee has it's part to play in the diagnosing of a deranged mind.

Coffee drinking, including coffee nerves (305.90);
Inability to sleep after drinking too much coffee (292.89),

Here are some others

(292.9) Shyness, also known as Asperger’sDisorder);
Sleepwalking (307.46);
Jet lag (307.45);
Snobbery (301.7, a subset of Antisocial Personality Disorder);
Insomnia (307.42);
to say nothing of tobacco smoking, which includes both getting hooked (305.10) and going cold turkey (292.0).
You were out of your mind the last time you had a nightmare (307.47).
Clumsiness is now a mental illness (315.4).
So is playing video games (Malingering, V65.2).
So is just about anything done “vigorously”.
So, under certain circumstances, is falling asleep at night.”

What a load of #######4!

Psychiatry must be held to account!

Psychiatry must be reformed.
