I was reading "schizophrenia and the human value again" and it seems there is a lot of hope for older schizophrenics. The author quotes bleuler who says "schizophrenics learn no longer to live in the world of delusions, but to live with it; they no longer allow themselves to be driven by madness..." and it goes on to say how the schizophrenic signs are incorporated into the personality, how they apply they learn to apply regular behaviour, etc. Really good book to read, it's old, from the mid 80's, but one of the best I've read.

Older schizophrenic use to refer to disorganized schizophrenics but now there's a chronic form of schizophrenia that came with the introductions of antipsychotics and de-institutionalization. Of course, Bleuler didn't live long enough to see either. However, chronic psychosis would over time suppress ones emotions and perhaps deaden the ego to a point the hallucinations may still be oppressive and threatening but less ... hmmm ... activating.
