Really, that religion exists dissproves the existence of any benevolent higher being.....

Your argument would also imply that your GP must be the harbinger of flu since people with flu tend to visit the doctor. How many doctors have caused war?

forget the modern christian-style deity. god is simply yourself.

What does that even mean? It doesn’t explain or answer anything. I see no correlation between religion and better mental health. The benefits of religion can be obtained by purely secular means; community, a sense of belonging, meditation, etc. These are the benefits that religions provide. However, religion can just as easily provide you with guilt, shame, fear, ignorance, hatred and loneliness.

Of course you can say that’s not ALL religion or that’s mans influence on religion (which is man made anyway) but you could make the same argument for psychiatry. There are good doctors and bad doctors and good therapies and bad therapies. Some are really ground breaking and extremely helpful while others make things so much worse.

I’m happy for anyone who is able to get something out of their belief in God. However, I don’t think its right to claim that God or Religion are “right” for everyone. Just like no single medication or single therapy is right for everyone.

self-worth. i said nothing about "religion" like you speak of it.

Religion is only around because people are afraid of dying and if they believe someone is there for them it makes them feel better. Quit fearing death and everything isn't as scary.

I have nothing against god, it's his fan club I can't stand.

Then why call it God? Why not simply call it self-worth?

I must admit I find it funny that the persecution of heretic by the Inquisition used torture to force confessions from people, many of whom were sufferers of mental illness who already stood out from such a primitive society.

As for psychiatry being money making lies, maybe the church should look inwards to see the biggest and best example of that. Here is a group that thought the earth was the centre of the universe and that it was flat. The stories of the bible are just that a collection of stories, similar to the tales of the Arabian Nights also are we to believe the bible and trust that we are all children of Adam and Eve. And of course how can the church explain dinosaurs and their fossilized remains?
The bright light at the end of a dark tunnel could be an oncoming train, but it could also be the way out of the darkness...

I'm not one of them (or maybe I am, depending on what you mean by that), but I'll try to answer anyway, even though it's been a while.

Image I think what we in the West call "classical" theism can have a therapeutic effect if the theist believes God loves her unconditionally, because that makes love a constant part of the theist's life, at least in her mind. Of course, this only applies to sincere theists, not persons who merely wish they could believe in God or who pretend to believe in God "just in case" God happens to be real and vengeful against nonbelievers.

Religion, and beliefs in gods has always existed, and today, these religious beliefs manifest in many worldwide, man-made systems of coping with fear of the unknown - mostly about death. Us humans have always had inquisitive minds, and we have a very difficult time with unanswerable questions. The minds of humankind have also always been fallible and gullible. In the desperate quest to find answers, our beliefs can easily and so very firmly be based on information that, rightly or wrongly, fits our own personal needs.

Gods have been created since the beginning of mankind out of a desperate need for comfort when people didn't have answers to those things that frightened them the most. Understandable. But there are people who don't take the time, or put forth the effort to question their religious beliefs because of fear of destroying the very foundation of their lives. This has helped propagate the continuing beliefs in the various forms of gods.

All of the religious books that have been written were simply the words of people unenlightened to the science of the things they feared and didn't understand at the time. There isn't any proof that any of those books were written from the 'divine' word of any god. Because many people have an understandable need to believe in a god, they tend to be blind to the improbable aspects of their god, their religion, and their religion's bibles or books.

People with minds open enough to honestly seek reality and truth come to understand that a belief is just that - a belief. The very definition of the word "belief" implies that their is the possibility of untruth. To have faith in a religious belief often means to ignore facts. It is dishonest when the word, "truth", is used in the sermons of religious belief. There are many who are unwilling to give up the comfort they find in their god or religion in spite of the facts about human nature, and facts proven by science.

And if there is doubt in the mind of someone who believes in a god, he/she is made to feel guilty because they have been told to 'have faith'. This is the ultimate mind control.

Those who want autonomy - that is, control of their own thoughts in this case - need to try to understand the human psychology of belief, and to try to be honest enough to admit to themselves that their beliefs might be wrong. When I was 'on the fence' about whether my god was real, I came across the following website that cemented my feeling that my belief in god had been misguided.

http://whywontgodhealamputees.com

I honestly feel a little bad writing this, knowing that I am suggesting that people rethink a very important source of their personal, spiritual comfort. I remember what it felt like when I came to the realization that my belief in the Christian god was very likely wrong. It did leave me feeling very empty at first, but I feel so much better now that my critical thinking has let me understand how our human brains and emotions work together when it comes to beliefs. There really is a great spiritualism to be gained in that alone. And there is a lot of comfort in realizing, and resigning oneself to the fact that no one knows all the answers.

buddhaneo@ wrote:To start with, psychiatry is all lies and can not help anyone, anywhere, anyhow.

This is a tremendously sweeping statement that doesn't hold water. Due to its wording, it would only take one grateful patient who has been helped by psychiatry to disprove it.

buddhaneo@ wrote:It is as Scientology says, the cause of all evil, in the universe as well as Creation. It is therefore the cause of all sickess everywhere, as evil is the cause of sickness.

To distill your argument, what you are asserting is twofold:
1) Psychiatry is the cause of all evil.
2) Evil is the cause of all sickness.

These assertions are totally unsound. For a start, they posit something called 'evil'. Like any other word, 'evil' is a man-made concept. It's a label we attach to conditions, scenarios, causes and effects we don't deem beneficial. This is a highly subjective process. For your assertions to be tenable, you would have to be clear about what you mean by evil. Secondly, you will have to be clear as to why X is necessarily the cause of all Y and why Y is necessarily the cause of all Z. The word 'all' in itself betrays the sweeping generalization inherent in your statements.

buddhaneo@ wrote:Love is our natural state and so is health.

Again, 'love' is a man-made concept, and our modern, Western concept of love is heavily derived from the concept of amour courtois that developed in 12th-century France. You only need to look at the way toddlers behave towards one another to notice that love is not our natural state. Jealousy, insecurity and competition are far better contenders for this 'natural state'. Health as a natural state is also a shaky assertion. The human body is far from perfect.

buddhaneo@ wrote:Health is what God is all about and God is Truth and Love. God Himself is infact anti-psychiatry.

Is he now? Did a voice in your head tell you that? On reflection, did it sound uncannily like your own voice?

buddhaneo@ wrote:I will try to explain how this all works so you can gain a thorough explanation of this.

No you won't. You'll do what all scientologists do: you'll sign up, post one post and then run off to the next website to spread your half-witted brainwashing message in a thoroughly discursive manner to anyone vulnerable and stupid enough to buy it. Lo and behold this is your first post.

buddhaneo@ wrote:As I said, health is our natural sate as we are all One with Spirit, with God who is Health. This may sound stupid to someone who is stupid, but that is how it works.

St. Anselm was keen on the idea of labelling those who didn't agree with his arguments 'fools'. Such a tactic betrays your own stupidity, as it is the weakest form of argument. It can be countered very simply with the equally weak 'this may sound intelligent to someone who is stupid'. You'll have to make your argumentation much more sophisticated if you want to peddle your message successfully.

buddhaneo@ wrote:In order to be healthy we must regain the knowledge that we are One with the Father God, who is obviously, Healthy.

Obviously? Is that the best you can do to establish a necessary link between premise and conclusion? Go back to school.

buddhaneo@ wrote:All things are possible to God, He did after all Create everything and can raise the dead and heal the sick from no matter what ails them. Nothing is impossible for God.

This stems from the traditional (to Christians) theistic conception of God, who see Him as omnipotent, omniscient and omnibenevolent. It's a conception easily undermined. Can He create a rock so big He can't lift it? Because if He can't He's not omnipotent. And if He can, then He's not omnipotent, because there's a limit to what He can lift. It's a nonsense conception of God.

buddhaneo@ wrote:Now for psychiatry. Psychiatry is just an evil money making scheme designed to keep people dependent on THE SYSTEM.

There's a grain of truth in this, but not for the reasons you assume. It's straightforward capitalism. I'm not anti-capitalist, but if we adopt a system based on monetary transactions, we have to accept that greed (inherent in man, not a product of psychiatry) will find expression through this. Again, your assertion is weak without evidence, as one could quite easily replace the word 'psychiatry' with any other establishment (e.g. scientology) and it would be no stronger or weaker an assertion.

buddhaneo@ wrote:It has links with Al Qeada and is a terrorist organisation.

Oh dear. You've really lost the plot, haven't you? This argument is so weak it doesn't even deserve a full answ...

buddhaneo@ wrote:They are indeed anti God despite all their calaims of Faith, if they have any, and infact they are trying to use the power of God against Him and all of you.

You should learn to spell before casting accusations of stupidity around. Otherwise you detract from your credibility. Psychiatry is not an organization, but a science. It is not based on claims of faith (or atheism) but on science.

buddhaneo@ wrote:There is absolutely NO TRUTH in psychiatry.

I'm afraid you're very, very wrong. Psychiatry has made great advances in recent decades and the brain and nervous system are increasingly well understood. You make this assertion from the standpoint of ignorance, which is never a good position from which to argue.

buddhaneo@ wrote:It is a system of control, and all of psychiatry have severe mental illnesses.

All of 'psychiatry' have severe mental illness? I presume you mean 'psychiatrists'? At least you disagree with lunatics like Tom Cruise, then, who say that mental illness doesn't exist.

buddhaneo@ wrote:How life works is that what we focus on expands in our life, and we all know that psychiatry focuses on mental illness, not health and so they attract mental illness into their lives - its quite simple.

Wrong. Psychiatry focuses on treating mental illness and improving mental health, so by your narrow logic it would be improved mental health that it would attract. The very fact that your argument can be shown to support the opposite conclusion highlights its frailty.

buddhaneo@ wrote:Without psychiatry this world would be a Paradise.

Throughout history fringe lunatics have offered a 'solution' to humanity's problems that begin with 'without...' and end with 'everything would be perfect', usually to their own financial or sexual benefit. The sad fact is they're always wrong, as every sect and closed community has shown. Even the story of Noah's ark presents this: the boat is filled with the progenitors of a utopian future, but not long after the flood Noah is sinning.

buddhaneo@ wrote:Perhaps this is enough for now.

The only thing you've said that I can agree with. Run along and peddle your tripe elsewhere.

Thanks TeaRowz. He/she was too easy an opponent. I doubt he/she will come back - scientologists tend to sign up and post some drivel that only weak-minded idiots will be attracted to - exactly the kind of people they want for their cult. Such forums are hunting grounds for them.
