I spent 25 years as a "bipolar", and finally was so physically ill that my GP sent me to a Endocrinologist to see what was going on (because of alarming hypoglycemic episodes, and a litany of other physical problems). Luckily I saw a Mayo Clinic endocrinologist who listened to my long history of shrinks and meds, my weird health and neurological problems, took one look at my labs, looked me in the eye and told me you have Celiacs disease. He put me on a grain free, sugar free diet that I have religiously adhered to for the last three years and my life has changed. I am not a "psycho", I am violently allergic to gluten. I take minimal meds - lamictal - I am sure it take care of the complex partial seizures (very common with Celiac).
So, I need to mention I have TD - laryngeal dystonia and spastic dystonia. That's kinda like the mental illness booby prize. Spent 15 years on lithium. Endured god awful torture, gained 100 lbs in one year on Risperdal, than lost it all in 3 months when I quit - and lord only knows what other horrors it did to me - then to find out, after 25 years, I am allergic to gluten. I always wondered how many more like me were out there - guess they finally figured it out.
Sorry to seem bitter - but WOW - that is a bit of a resentment I need to let go of.
Thanks for letting me vent a bit of steam.
P.S.: Don't eat the donut!
