I came to these forums tonight, searching for something a bit unrelated and see some threads directly related to what i've been researching lately. So, I feel compelled to add to the thread here for the benefit of any who are interested.
I wrote this email a month ago on the subject:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shamanism "Shamanism is a 'calling'. Individuals who are 'called' typically experience an illness of some sort over a prolonged period of time. This illness will prompt the individual to seek out spiritual guidance and other shamanic healers. Such illnesses are usually not healed/curable by physicians and western medicine. The shaman heals through spiritual means that consequently affect the human world by bringing about restored health."
"The wounded healer is archetype for a shamanizing journey. This process is important to the young shaman. He undergoes a type of sickness that pushes him to the brink of death. This happens for two reasons:
The shaman crosses over to the under world. This happens so the shaman can venture to its depths to bring back vital information for the sick, and the tribe.
The shaman must become sick to understand sickness. When the shaman overcomes his own sickness he will hold the cure to heal all that suffer. This is the uncanny mark of the wounded healer."
http://books.google.com/books?id=X8waCm ... st&f=false "[...]a person becomes a shaman through the classic shamanist experience of social alienation and inexplicable "spirit illness"[...]"
"[...]but most people dread the spirit illness and the hard life of a social outcast it leads to."
Terence McKenna said schizophrenia was really just shamanism:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEglHjd_gUQ Imagine: modern-day shamans - no longer wanted by society. In another culture, or time, a shaman would be needed, praised, respected, but today they are labeled and medicated.
There is also a nice Youtube channel called BipolarORwakingup which contains outstanding videos based on the theory that bipolar disorder is merely a healing process for traumatized individuals. Instead, they are medicated and the healing never happens.
