Antipsychotic medication Suicide and Violence.

Postby Shrink resistant » Sun Apr 24, 2005 10:55 pm

I have known many victims of coercive psychiatry, that have been forcefully drugged, that have committed suicide while on these drugs. One of the side effects of antipsychotic medication is 'akathisia' the symptoms of akathisia is extreme agitation. A person suffering akathisia is at an increased risk of committing suicide or acts of violence. Also akathisia can exacerbate psychosis.

So if you are a friend or carer of someone on these medications and you witness any of the above symptoms, make sure you don't jump to conclusions.

Here's a link to further information about this very common deadly side effect.

It's a sad fact that coercive psychiatry drugs cause a lot of death we witness, but nothing is done about it.

hav0k,

A lot of people that experience psychosis are really just having an allergic reaction to gluten. To some people, gluten is like a really bad acid trip. Unfortunately gluten is in a lot of processed food, the good thing is theres many gluten free products hitting the shops.

The first thing I would do is try going gluten free for 3 months and see if the psychosis goes away.

Type gluten & schizophrenia into google and have a look.

"Akathisia is a common side effect of neuroleptic drugs that may present with behavioral disturbances. There have been preliminary reports on the association between violence and akathisia. We report the first observational study of this relationship. Patients studied were from a special unit for violent patients. A closed-circuit television camera was installed in each of the corners in its dayroom. Incidents of assault plus the 5 minutes preceding each assault were recorded on videotape. Participants and bystanders were rated for the motor component of akathisia. For each of nine incidents, we compared the akathisia scores for participants and for bystanders. Both victims and assailants were akathisic before about half of all incidents; bystanders rarely were. The classification of the movements we rated and the implications for further studies are discussed."

hav0k,

I think you should raise this with your shrink. As it says in that Scottish article above, many shrinks are unaware of this very common 'akathisia' side effect. You probably should take some information about it to show your shrink.

I don't know what your shrink is like but from experience, theres a fair chance they wont listen to you about this issue.

Do you have Consumer Advocates where you are?

I am always digusted with shrinks that wont listen to their patients. The small act of having an advocate witness a patients request seems to always result in the patient being heard. It sux but that's the way it is.
