Objectivity

I am skeptical of the rationality of polarized thinking and this "Anti-Psych" forum could include a variety of different types of people that can do damage to many who may come here out of desperation after being let down or abused or preyed on at their worst and are fine or damaged worse than their illness from seeking help...

So I will say that many people on meds and seeing therapists are living better lives and good for them... Scientology is a different agenda and Psychiatric Survivors were put through hell and have a right to feel the way they do and many people were stressed and were so desperate that thinking they were sick to get help was a step forward and may have been let down.

People who experienced being medicated as children by force are often against Psychiatry because sometimes they are being medicated for being a brat or for outbursts to show abuse and are hurt.

I think the reality is that while I agree with not knocking those helped by psychiatry because many are happier because of it, on the flip side to not validate those who have feelings about it because of being harmed and being open to the fact that many get better without it, is as bad as the scientologists... it also limits options to help people.

the best way to handle certain types of professionals is to ask about their credentials and why they want to do their job and researching psychology and finding out based on what they tell you, what their intentions are while not stooping to their level and still seeing them as people.

I say this because the professionals that really want to help that know their $#%^ are able to be patient with you when you recall disasters in the past with people in the profession who are in that field and are on a mission for all the wrong reasons and the fear mongering on file actually makes sense with a professional, when they want to help you believe you. Like a therapist with a mentally ill or drunk parent or sibling or a recovered therapist, who may seem to be safe at first because they dedicated a career to helping sick people are the first to overreact and lock you up for being "dangerous" for nothing... they are not well.

plus new psychiatrists are a golden opportunity to plant the seed, the new ones feel bad for the lobotomy etc years and will help more than the old drug pushers and is a plus.

assertiveness is helpful to them too...

Psychiatry has helped me a lot, but there have been times when I felt my doctors were overly critical of myself and have patronized me, telling me I think too much or that I was delusional. One problem I have with psychiatry is the use of reality tests and some of the diagnostic criteria include normal things, such as belief in the supernatural or reclusiveness.

Does belief in the supernatural include believing in a god?

I guess it would include that. But I think if the belief exists in a cultural context then it would not be considered delusional.
