Medication at a young age- anyone who can relate?

Postby northernlights » Sun Feb 21, 2010 12:01 am

Hi i went on medication ages 14-20 at high doses for OCD. Those times I felt numb. I've been off medication for 6 months now and still feel numb. I am wondering if I will ever get my feelings back or this is something that is permanent from developing on the drugs? Is there anyone who has gone through this? Thank you.

I'm on the maximum dose of lexapro for ocd. I felt numb for the first 4 months of being on medication, but I sort of trained myself to feel emotions again. It can go away, but I think it may not be due to medication. It might be something to do with the stress of having ocd. There were periods before I took medication where I felt almost no emotion due to the illness. I take risperdal now and even antipsychotics don't really blunt my emotions.

Were you put on it at a young age as well? I'm not sure if thats a factor in it but I feel it might be. I've tried training myself, it's my libido as well that has left me. I think they side effects from being on it for so long. I felt emotions the first couple years then I got more and more flat.

What drugs?

Ages 12-15 - Zoloft - 200mgs

Age 16-18 - Strattera - 120mgs

On Strattera - Selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor - I could not get an erection / lost my libido. It came back, if memory serves me correctly, approx 1 mth after discontinuance.

You will recover. It will take time. But you'll never be the same. We are all products of the system. Would I have turned out bipolar if I wasn't put on said medication? We'll never know.

I just don't get why it's been 6 months and it hasn't come back. I think I have made some small improvements but I'm wondering now if this is how I will be for the rest of my life at this point, which I'm trying to refuse to believe.
Also, what do you mean turned out bipolar? were you not before?
