Mental Disorder Diagnostics - Fact or Opinion?

I was watching this video, and really it's quite true. It starts off by talking about homosexuality and how it was considered a mental disorder, which, some of you may find uninteresting. However, it then gets off that subject on to information on how a mental disorder is diagnosed. The lady explains what ADHD is - she breaks it down to where all these things (such as talking excessively or not paying attention when talked to) are considered unacceptable behaviors. It's more based on morals than facts. Such as homosexuality (as an example)... It was completely normal and in fact sometimes expected behavior until Christianity became popular (which she doesn't mention Christianity, but it's true). So, once it became popular, it was no longer normal. When we came up with mental disorders, it was considered a mental disorder. If you're not normal, you're considered mentally disabled. Such as, mathematics disorder - if you are bad at math, you are labeled as mentally ill. Being incarcerated is basically being put in jail. You can't leave unless they say you can, and you have limited freedom. So, why is it, that you can be incarcerated for a mental hospital if someone decides you MIGHT hurt yourself or others, and the legal system only does when you DID?

While I don't think that all the abnormal behaviors that are disorders shouldn't be tried to make normal (such as depression, schizophrenia, anxiety, etc), I do believe that it is wrong to try to make a lot of them normal.

Thoughts?
Bipolar II, Severe Social Anxiety, Extrovert. Wonderful combination eh?

Everyone knows this... are you going to tell a psych that his opinion isn't fact?

Here's a psychologist that advocates an anti-med attitude.

You are absolutely right, mental illness does not exist. Everyone has psychological problems, they range in severity from mild to extreme. Where does it become a disorder and what is disruption of normal functioning? These terms have been defined, but I dispute the definitions...
