25 GOOD REASONS WHY PSYCHIATRY MUST BE ABOLISHED
by Don Weitz

1. Because psychiatrists frequently cause harm, permanent disabilities, death - death of the body-mind-spirit.

2. Because psychiatrists frequently violate the Hippocratic Oath which orders all physicians "First Do No Harm."

3. Because psychiatrists patronize and disempower people, especially their patients.

4. Because psychiatry is not a medical science.

5. Because psychiatry is quackery, a pseudo-science which lacks independent diagnostic tests, testable hypotheses, and cures for "schizophrenia" and all other types of alleged "mental illness" or "mental disorder".

6. Because psychiatrists can not accurately and reliably predict dangerousness, violence, or any other type of human behaviour, yet make such claims as "expert witnesses", and with the media promote the "dangerous mental patient" myth/stereotype.

7. Because psychiatrists have caused a worldwide epidemic of brain damage by promoting and prescribing brain-disabling treatments such as the neuroleptics, antidepressants, electroconvulsive brainwashing (electroshock), and psychosurgery (lobotomy).

8. Because psychiatrists manufacture hundreds of "mental disorders" classified in its bible called "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders" (a modern witch-hunting manual); such "mental disorders" and "symptoms" are in fact negative, class-and-culturally-biased moral judgments for dissident ways of coping with personal problems and alternative ways of perceiving, interpreting or being in the world.

9. Because psychiatrists, blinded by their medical model bias, fraudulently pathologize and label people's serious life or existential crises as "symptoms" of "mental illness" or "mental disorder" such as "schizophrenia","bipolar affective disorder", and "personality disorder".

10. Because psychiatrists compound this fraud by falsely claiming, without scientific proof, that these "mental disorders" are caused by a "biochemical imbalance" in the brain, genetic factors or "genetic predispositions", despite the fact that there are no genetic factors in "mental illness".

11. Because psychiatrists frequently misinform their patients, families and the public by claiming that brain-disabling procedures such as the neurotoxins (e.g.,"antipsychotic medication" and "antidepressasnts"), electroconvulsive brainwashing (electroconvulsive therapy/"ECT"), psychosurgery (lobotomy) and other behaviour modification-mind control procedures are "safe, effective and lifesaving". The exact opposite is tragically true.

12. Because psychiatrists routinely deceive or lie to patients, prisoners, their families, and the public.

13. Because psychiatrists routinely and willfully violate the medical-ethical principle of "informed consent" by misinforming or not informing their patients about the numerous toxic, disabling and frequently permanent effects of the neuroleptics such as memory loss, tardive dyskinesia, tardive psychosis, parkinsonism, dementia (all signs of brain damage), and death.

14. Because psychiatrists routinely threaten, intimidate or coerce many patients - particularly women, children, the elderly, and prisoners - into consenting to health-threatening/brain-damaging "treatment" such as the antidepressants, neuroleptics, electroconvulsive brainwashing, and hi-risk experiments.

15. Because psychiatrists frequently fail to fully inform psychiatric inmates and prisoners about existing safe and humane, non-medical alternatives in the community such as survivor-controlled crisis centres, drop-ins, self-help or advocacy groups, diet, massage, wholistic medicine, affordable supportive housing, and jobs.

16. Because psychiatrists are sexist in frequently stereotyping women in crisis as "hysterical" or "over-emotional", blaming women whenever they voice real complaints and assertively express their feelings and emotions, prescribing massive doses of tranquilizers and antidrepressants to disproportionately large numbers of women, and in sexually assaulting women in their offices and institutions.

17. Because psychiatrists, particularly white male psychiatrists, are homophobic - the American Psychiatric Association (APA) once labelled homosexuality as a "mental illness" or "mental disorder" - and have used forced electroshock on lesbians, trying to coerce them into adopting a heterosexual life style.

18. Because psychiatrists are ageist in prescribing tranquilizers, antidepressants ("medication") and electroconvulsive brainwashing for disproportionately large numbers of elderly people - a form of elder abuse.

19. Because psychiatrists are racist in disproportionately incarcerating and drugging people of African descent, aboringal people, other people of colour and labelling them "psychotic" or "schizophrenic".

20. Because psychiatrists routinely violate people's civil rights, human rights and constitutional rights such as imprisoning innocent people without court trial or public hearing ("involuntary commitment"), and subjecting them to cruel and unusual punishments or tortures such as forced drugging, electroconvulsive brainwashing, psychosurgery, solitary confinement, "chemical restraints", and 4-point or 5-point restraints.

21. Because psychiatrists masterminded the mass murder of hundreds of thousands of vulnerable people including disabled children, the elderly and psychiatric patients during The Holocaust in Nazi Germany, and "selected" hundreds of thousands of concentration camp prisoners for death ("T-4 euthanasia" program) - historical facts still missing in psychiatric textbooks and histories.

22. Because psychiatrists have willingly participated in and administered mind-control experiments in the United States and Canada since the early 1950s - its chief targets have been poor patients, women, dissidents and prisoners.

23. Because psychiatry, particularly institutional-biological psychiatry, is based on the 3 Fs: Fear, Fraud, and Force.

24. Because psychiatry is a form of social control or punishment - not treatment.

25. Because psychiatry, particularly institutional-biological psychiatry, is fascist - a direct threat to democracy, human rights and life.

Healing the brain is difficult and often psychiatrists are seen in a degarotary way from the doctors of other fields, exactly because it's harder to treat medical disorders. But discarding psychiatry all together is probably not the best thing to do, given that the medication that they offer, although it has side-effects it is usually helpful.

For a start, it's not an article, it's a list. It doesn't help that it at no point makes an attempt to validate it's claims, it smacks of exactly the dogma it accuses the DSM of pepetuating, and yet, the DSM actually allows for the fact that it doesn't hold all the answers. Also, the list is not objective, so why should anyone responding be so?

I'm not the most pro-psychology person here, however, if you are going to speak out against it, it is best to do so with more insight into the topic than shown in this list.

I have to completely disagree with this post.

Psychiatrists are wonderful doctors, and for me personally i've had nothing but postive expierences with my Psychiatrist that i've been seeing for over 8 yrs.

I wouldn't change that for the world.

So I have to disagree here, I think that's alot of false information there.

Here we go:

Bold claim, where are the numbers to back it up?

2. Because psychiatrists frequently violate the Hippocratic Oath which orders all physicians "First Do No Harm."

Again, frequently is a vagary that shouldn't be there if we are attempting to discard an establishment as entrenched in society as this.

3. Because psychiatrists patronize and disempower people, especially their patients.

That's a generalization, that should not be applied to all psychiatrists, and could easily be fixed by reforming psychiatry rather than abolishing it.

4. Because psychiatry is not a medical science.

In that case what do you mean by medical science? Making a claim that something is not a medical science is best followed by reasons why it isn't.

5. Because psychiatry is quackery, a pseudo-science which lacks independent diagnostic tests, testable hypotheses, and cures for "schizophrenia" and all other types of alleged "mental illness" or "mental disorder".

Actually, that's not the case with psychiatry in which a study of brain chemistry is significant. I also wonder, am I supposed to accept the concept of spirit-death as medical science?

6. Because psychiatrists can not accurately and reliably predict dangerousness, violence, or any other type of human behaviour, yet make such claims as "expert witnesses", and with the media promote the "dangerous mental patient" myth/stereotype.

So, because they are not psychic, we must discard any theories or analysis that might be useful? Their predictions are actually reliable, not infallible, however the two are not one and the same.

7. Because psychiatrists have caused a worldwide epidemic of brain damage by promoting and prescribing brain-disabling treatments such as the neuroleptics, antidepressants, electroconvulsive brainwashing (electroshock), and psychosurgery (lobotomy).

In order for it to be an epidemic, it needs to be infectious, or contagious in some way.

It's not a bible. It establishes, within itself, that there are cultural issues to consider, and that it is merely a means to communicate to each other on similar conditions.

Also, so far, we've hit at least 3 value judgements, and biased statements. Lat: Where is the objectivity you value?

I'll skip ahead to a stunning attempt at propaganda:

A lot of different people, in varied professions had a hand in deaths in WWII. Should we abolish all medicine because of the famed Doctor Death?

Anyway, this article is the most dogmatic, reactionary, biased, and all around poor argument for the anti-psychiatry movement. It does the opposite of what it claims it wishes to do. One could almost suspect it of being an argument for psychiatry, by making the anti-psychiatry movement look even more "out there" than Freud.

Don't know where the list came from, but it's completely false.

I hope no one reading that will take judgement because the information posted by Latitudinarian is not correct.

Thanks for the responses.

My reasons for posting this article come from my personal experience as a consumer. I spent 2 1/2 years as an inpatient , I witnessed first hand the damaging effects of pyschiartry. The psych hospital I refer to was small (30 beds). 14 of the patients I got to know over this period have suicided. In another clinic I attended my girlfreind and best freind suicided as a direct result of psychiatric practices. MY FRIENDS suicides were a direct result of the advice given, that they will never recoverer, the stigma of their diagnosis, and the horrific medication they were forced to take. I know first hand why these suicides occurred as I lived this life of horror too . After my girl friends death I escaped from pyschiartry, I have not taken meds for 20 years. I recovered and I am sure my friends would have if they could have escaped too.

I have just returned from a community support group meeting for psychiatric survivors. I know first hand the anger and fear that is ligitimately felt towards psychiartry.

I think this article is spot on and I know plenty of people that agree with me. One only has to look at the advertising material contained in this forum to gauge its pro psychiartry stance.

However, I also respect peoples right to disagree with me.

If only this right to disagree was applied evenly and forced psychiartric treatment was abolished my friends may still be alive.

Mental Patients' Liberation: Why? How?

Inside the hospital, of course, mental patients are a recognizable group with a recognizable identity: that of victims in a living hell. The need to liberate our brothers and sisters on the inside needs no explanation.

As a long-range solution, mental patient's liberation means ending all involuntary commitment of law-abiding people, thereby restoring one of America's most fundamental and most important promises. But the hospital doors are still locked and you are still inside. In our consciousness-raising sessions, we have discussed how we got in, and how we got out, and we have discovered that all of us got out by learning to tell the doctors what they wanted to hear. We call it "learning to shuffle." We discovered, in sharing our experiences, that when we loudly proclaimed (in the hospital) that we were not sick and that the doctors should leave us alone, we were rewarded with forced hypodermic injections of Thorazine and trips to the seclusion room, but when we learned to say humbly "I was sick, but with my doctor's help I'm getting well," our imprisonment neared its end. You will have the satisfaction of knowing which is truth and which is falsehood, and of knowing that although they have imprisoned your body, they do not have your mind.

The problems of the ex-patient are more subtle but no less pressing. Many ex-patients try to cope with what has happened to them by pretending that the experience never occurred. However, because the experience of having once been a mental patient teaches you to think of yourself as less than human, this is not a satisfactory solution. People feel emotions. They are justifiably happy or sad, angry, calm, elated, and so forth. As patients, however, we were taught to think of ourselves as permanently crippled, and we tend to react to the normal ups and downs of life as affirmations of our secret deformity. In addition, society imposes penalties upon ex-patients which affect you whether or not you acknowledge your identity. For the rest of your life, you will lie on applications for jobs, schools, and driver's licenses, and worry about being found out. Your friends and acquaintances will be divided into two groups, those who know and those who don't, and it will always be necessary to watch what you say to the latter.

Ex-patients are full of anger at what has been done to them, but alone and unorganized this anger is not expressed and is often turned inward against oneself. Our anger is the fuel of our movement, and when we come together, acknowledging our identity to ourselves and to teach other, we will have made the first and largest step in striking back at our oppressors.

("Mental Patients' Liberation: Why? How?" was originally distributed in the early 1970s by Mental Patients' Resistance of Brooklyn, New York.)
