25 GOOD REASONS WHY PSYCHIATRY MUST BE ABOLISHED

I don't believe that psychiatry should be abolished. It has a place in our society for those with severe mental illness. All that needs to be done is to reform psychiatry to make it more humane. For example sectioning is unnecessary a lot of the time and probably happens too often.

Psychiatry should be abolished as a medical specialty because medical school education is not needed nor even helpful for doing counselling or so-called psychotherapy, because the perception of mental illness as a biological entity is mistaken, because psychiatry's "treatments" other than counselling or psychotherapy (primarily drugs and electroshock) hurt rather than help people, because nonpsychiatric physicians are better able than psychiatrists to treat real brain disease, and because nonpsychiatric physicians' acceptance of psychiatry as a medical specialty is a poor reflection on the medical profession as a whole.

I feel torn.

I know, by personal experience of one real world case, of where psychiatry probably saved a life.
The friend was sectioned after becoming paranoid to the extent of pouring gasoline on herself
so her enemies would be scared off. 72 hours of involuntary commitment and she was stabilized
and able to receive medical treatment. It turned out to be a brain tumour that was,
mercifully, benign and could be treated.

That was one case. One the other hand I know personally of cases where psychiatry has definitely caused
huge damage and a number where it very well may have done significant harm.
And lots of cases where it was a complete waste of time and money even if only temporarily.

So, in my own experience, it would be wrong to say that no-one has ever benefited from psychiatry.

But on the other hand taken as a whole psychiatry does more harm than good.

So to say "The only good psychiatrist is a dead psychiatrist" would be overreaching and untrue (in my view)
but on the other hand to say "The world would be a better place if psychiatry were abolished" is true.

Don't get me wrong, I do think psychiatry was useful at one time (in moving some things from "bad" to "mad").
But that time has passed and so should psychiatry.

Euh. I don't think I'll be making any major decisions based on anything found on Youtube. If cable TV is junk, I hate to see what word I'd have to come up with to describe that . . .

In my province, there used to be that "outdated," "inhumane," system of public institutions for the mentally ill. There were many of them. So then this anti-psychiatry/absurd idea of personal liberty kicked in sometime around the time when the ME generation began to revolt against their parents. Then they shut down all the institutions and let all these poor oppressed precious individuals be free! Free at last!

They're all in downtown Vancouver addicted to drugs and homeless now, thousands of them. So nobody wants to build social housing and nobody wants to hire crazy people for any job and nobody wants to oppress those poor beautiful individuals by giving them the treatment they need and the home they are unable to provide for themselves.

There's nothing wrong with being institutionalized, if that's what would provide the best quality of life. It sure beats being cast out into the street to satisfy liberal guilt (the overt reason) while conveniently cutting publicly funded psychiatric care (the real reason). At very least, without psychiatric institutionalization, thousands of people wouldn't even have the basic necessities of life, and have absolutely no capability of finding it themselves.

SYL, I agree with only one thing you said. That's the institution part. However, you don't take innocent people out of their homes and force them to live in an unfamiliar environment. That's what happening in places I know. There needs to be some type of restraint in that there isn't people in these places that should be. That's why it's so abused.

Because psychiatry is a form of social control or punishment - not treatment.......... It is really a very good point and should be accepted

The dilemna here is should a self-confessed lunatic (the site administrator who posted early in this thread) be running a community of 25 000? I think not!

She doesn't run this 'community', and nor do I. You don't know who actually runs this website, and very few other regular members know either. This thread will be locked as the issue has been extensively discussed already. indeed, this thread was started 5 years ago.
