I find it hard to hear that you've asked someone for help and they've told you to 'deal with it on your own'; whilst a therapist/counsellor shouldn't take the other extreme and just plain tell you what to do, they should definately be willing to engage in a working relationship with you to try and help you through the things you'd like to resolve.
I'm really sad that so many have had bad experiences of therapists/counsellors... I can't account for their actions, of course, but one thing that comes to mind is the fact that (at least in the UK) one can legally practice as a 'counsellor' or 'therapist' without being accredited by an appropriate body or holding proper qualifications. Although this is being re-worked, I believe.
So unfortunately, as Fragment Shadow mentioned, people will come across those who just don't have enough training and experience in dealing with those who seek help, so that empathy, etc. is not present. It's pretty disgusting, actually.
