Pitiful psychologists and counselors

We already know how pitiful psychiatry can be.

But what about psychologists and counselors. They are "trained" to help you yet they tell you in condescending ways how "You have to do the work"...."You have to figure it out on your own" yet you don't even know what it is or what they are referring too. Everything they speak about is vague and meaningless to you and your life.

Then they treat you suspiciously and arrogantly. How is that therapeutic or helpful?

Anybody been through that...

I think the diagnosis of Psychosis is insulting, because it means they think you are detached from reality. I've been told by doctors that I was caught up in my thoughts and detached from reality which is complete rubbish of course since my true diagnosis is OCD, not Psychosis.

But I don't think they're all bad. They just need to stop telling people that they're detached from reality, when reality is completely dependent on how we perceive it.

By the way- I'm not against psychiatric drugs and treatment but some of the terminology is really insulting and needs to be changed. Can't they just say that people with Schizophrenia have altered perceptions of the world that don't conform with cultural or subcultural norms?

The counsellors from my highschool were fine it's when entering a psychiatrist they get to do whatever the hell they want with you and push their ideas upon you as the only option.

I've one one social worker that wasn't helpful...

But i've had a psychiatrist for over 12 yrs that was fantastic, and another social worker that is good too, still with the social worker back and forth.

I think finding someone that can help you ,and that you feel comfortable with is hard.... There are those doctors in all fields that don't seem to care about their patients, but there are more often then not those that do.

Sorry you had such a bad times with them, I've never had it where I am against it, because it saved my life so many times, and helped me in more ways then I can count.

When I was 16 yes and severely depressed. I didn't know what was wrong with me, my parents didn't either, we knew about the anxiety, my family doctor told me about that, but my pdoc helped me with everything else. Not sure where i'd be today emotionally etc without her help.

I've been lucky to have had her during the worse years of my life, she helped me through my darkest days...

Psychologists, psychiatrists and counsellors are people too, meaning they have varying and individual values, beliefs, attitudes, thoughts on what may be helpful for particular circumstances etc like everyone else. Aren't some people unkind? Aren't some people criminals? To say that these professionals are unhelpful, arrogant and condescending is the same thing as saying that ALL people are unkind, that ALL people are criminals. And of course, there are times when our behaviour isnt consistent (people are unkind on particular occasions), the same with psychs and the like.

And on a final note, its really just a case of trial and error until you can find a professional who can help. These professionals also specialise in particular areas of mental health anyway. For example: a psych who is helpful for people going through relationship problems, may not help a person who is suffering suicidal thoughts, intentions and depression.

The tears that trickle down at one time, are as unmeaning as the loud laugh which succeeds them
