Diagnosis of BPD because I ticked off my shrink

Postby Mesmerized » Sat Aug 23, 2008 10:52 pm

I went to a psychotherapist at the suggestion of a pain doctor and he did absolutely nothing to help me other than cycle me through a bunch of theories that there wasn't any evidence for.

He even manufactured it in my chart.

"Do you think your father endulged you?"

Me: "absolutely not."

[writes in chart] endulged by father.

He went trhough a bunch of theories from my parents traumatizing me, to depression, to add., to bipolar, to personality disorder where he pretty much stuck.

The reason he ended up at personality disorder in my opinion was that he got ticked off at me for asking for a diagnosis and my chart. First he told me that I couldn't have my chart - I wanted it because I wanted to know what the heck he was writing in there since he had very few practical suggestions, and he would end up telling my other dotors my diagnosis even though he would deny having given me one when I asked him.

I informed him that it was my own chart legaly and I had a right to see it. He told me that he didn't want to give it to me because he felt 'violated.' This is sick, he is a sixty year old man telling a woman in her thirties something like this. Nasty.

Mainly he was protecting himself. He had a bunch of useless crap in there. But my having asked provided the basis of giving me the nonspecific personality disorder. Basically I ticked him off by doing something that would be natural under any circumstance because he personally felt threatened, and said that I was being too 'intense' and too difficult and too emotional.

I told him that he was the one that seemed emotional. I had never felt violated in my life, and he was introducing negativity into an interaction that should have been professional.

I think that this was an abuse of his profession. Just like a shrink that uses his office to get women into bed, to say that someone's nuts just because they personally irritate you or threaten you through doing nothin wrong is using his power for personal purposes in my opinion.

And it is a totally useless diagnosis. It had nothing to do with what I went in for, my back pain. I didn't have personal problems and didn't need his opinion on my personality. Plus it is a total garbage can diagnosis that they throw around without seeming to need their client to have any of the actual features. If I take the test I have maybe two of ten.

What do you think?

Heya Mesmerized,

This certainly seems unprofessional to me, from your description of it. Just go back a bit though: Why on earth did your pain doctor refer you to a psychotherapist? Be aware that you have the right not to arrange an appointment with this doctor again. I mean, you can very well say to yourself right now that you'll never see him again. He's just a useless old cranky man.
