Listen to this: medications will make me more intelligent!!

According to a mental health professional who once tried to talk me into getting antidepressants even though I explicitly stated that I did not want antidepressants, antidepressants would make me more intelligent. I'm pretty sure I did not misinterpret her words, because that's precisely what she told me: "antidepressants will make you more intelligent."

Not wanting the psychologist to end up with the false impression that I was the stupid ignorant that she probably thought I was, I told her that intelligence is genetic and whether you realize your intelligence potential depends on your upbringing, and that there are no medications on this planet known to increase intelligence. She did not pay attention to my objections and continued saying that antidepressants would make me more intelligent.

What should I do the next time I encounter a mental health professional like this one?

Hi,

You could just as easily have merged this topic with your other one because we were talking about much the same thing in that one. If she genuinely said that, then she is wrong, but you don't have to come here all excited about it. I don't know what you hope to achieve by doing this.

The fact of the matter is that many psychologists, psychiatrists, and doctors are competent people. So, chances are that the next one you meet will be agreeable to you.

Kevin.

I met two mental health professionals, one after the other, who were not agreeable to me.

Okay, perhaps you need to examine your attitude to them instead then. I mean, are you going to see them because you genuinely want to get help?; or are you going to see them with the pretence that they won't be able to help you at all?

I went to see them because at the time I was going through a personal crisis and psychological help was the only reasonable way out of that crisis. (It had to do with problems I had with some roommates back in college.) I wasn't interested in getting "help" with my problems, as I felt like a normal person back then and didn't feel that my "problems" amounted to anything psychiatric in nature. I only wanted help with the problem at hand.
