Slightly better but she told me that medications were going to make me more intelligent and she didn't seem very interested in hearing my story. She rebuffed everything I said till I reached the point where felt I was better off keeping my thoughts to myself. When you seek the counsel of a mental health professional, and her actions instead of making you open up encourage you to keep your thoughts to yourself, it's a sign that there is no chemistry between the mental health professional and the patient and it's time to find someone else. I didn't bother finding someone else and decided to deal with my problems on my own.

hehe, I still find it incredible that she said that. She probably has this warped view of what patients are like. Maybe we should all read what psychology text-books are saying about us, because it seems that in a lot of cases, there is a break-down of understanding between doctor and patient. This is another 'thumbs-up' for the case of making ex-patients becoming psychologists themselves.

No, she did not. Her opinion is very professional and a common method and procedure to take on with depressed patients.

When I saw the topic's title, I thought I would find out how he or she sexually harassed you.

Probably not unethical as such but I do believe she didn't word her reply very well. She could have said "we usually do this therapy in conjunction with medication because we find the results far better".

She might have been concerned that if the therapy went ahead without medication and didn't work that she would then have been blamed in some way.

I was told that I needed to be on medication for a certain length of time before therapy would help. Now what would commonly happen is the therapist and I would get on okay at first.

However, once they started any kind of "confronting", I would feel betrayed and that they'd used my words against me and then would not go back. I might add that I have a neurological disorder in addition to chronic depression and this affects how I understand spoken language.

I doubt I would ever go back to therapy because what I really needed was some practical assistance with life skills and I'm now getting that from other sources. If I can keep on top of life, I'm less likely to get depressed.

Nope. No evidence of unethical treatment here.

yes, indeed

I know a woman, PhD psychiatrist, a Uni professor, who attempted suicide 3 times in her adolescence, and then she got interested in psychiatry while trying to help herself. Afterward, she graduated and did post-graduate studies on psychiatry. Now, she is teaching and doing scientific research.

I didn't bother receiving therapy from that woman. The internet has been my therapist for the last 6 years.

If internet has been you best therapist for the last 6 yrs, then tell us where are you having problem? Just post here, after we will suggest you, if you don't like that woman.

Thnks

OMG, I just read your post. Still flabbergasted at what the psychologist said to you, but not surprised.

It is simple logic though, you will inevitably find incompetent psychologists and psychiatists in your endevours for well-being. She was not unprofessional, just an 'idiot' and a poor practitioner of her trade.

I would support meds if you were suicidal or delusional(Bi polar 1) from the depression. You are 100% correct in trying to beat your depression through behavioural therapy first. Wish I had your thought process before allowing Doctors to prescribe psychotropic medications and lastly, stimulant meds.

I take supplements in the form of co-enzyme Q10, fish oil concentrate, Brahmi ginko and the occassion VB complex. Therapy with a Clinical psychologist is working, but still some way to go. She is excellent, not sure what her views are on medications, we never mention them at all.

My suggestion is to look around for a competent psychologist who does not have such closed views on treatment.

Therapy can help people with depression. What makes her think you have depression? It is your opinion that matters the most, not hers.

she is an idiot, most psychiatrists and psychologists are idiots, just paid members of the pharmaceutical companies and the corrupt health care industry

she doesnt want to do any real work, she just wants to control you and hope you get better that way

find another psychologist or try to find peace with yourself, something that is hard to do when we live in a cruel world

I wish I could have left some of the shrinks I saw when they first started in on the go on medication crap
