That is silly. There are good doctors and bad doctors and in between doctors. Not all of them want to help. Sometimes you might rub one doc the wrong way or vice versa and it just wouldnt work no matter. Not all of them are competent either...sometimes you wonder if they went to school in some other country that doesnt have our standards. Some go into psychiatry because theyre screwed up in their heads and want to *understand* it.

Not all of them are competent and not all of them really care about helping --- Thats a fact Jack

This is very true. I'm starting to see this with my current psych. He hasn't once asked if I'm experiencing side effects which I am. And when he reads over my history, he threatens to throw me into the hospital because of my bad actions. Well obviously I had bad actions, I was suffering from psychosis. I've maintained a decent job with good benefits and work environment (except when things get real busy) and a network of friends and he hasn't made any changes to my medication yet even with the side effects which he won't ask. I see him once a month and didn't see him after I got out of the hospital and got my new job for 2 months because he had to go off to the carribean or something, while I'm stuck working my ass off trying to payoff student loans. I don't understand why my doctor would release me to a doctor who was just going on to vacations while I'm in a new job where I need to be in shape. The only reason it's gone well is because of how good my co-workers and owner is. /rant

3 years ago I went to see a psychologist because I thought I was bipolar. I pretty much walked in, sat down, and said I think I'm bipolar. He asked me why and I said because sometimes I'm happy and sometimes I'm sad. That's all it took and I was officially diagnosed bipolar. He wanted to start me on lithium so he referred me to a psychiatrist for the prescription. The psychiatrist saw me twice and concluded I didn't have bipolar so I wasn't gonna get the prescription.

That's my experience with inadequate doctors. I'm seeing a social worker now and he at least seems to care about my main concerns. I don't really trust anybody's feeling towards me though so it's hard to tell.

All in all, there are some stupid doctors out there.

Or, you're probably not bipolar. :) And the psychologist was wrong, and inept to give a diagnosis without the ability to prescribe medication.

Trust the psychiatrist. He's probably right.

The proof: If you're writing here now, as an unmedicated bipolar person, after 3 years, and you're not in a state of psychosis...I sincerely doubt you're bipolar, dude.

Happy and sad has nothing to do with the highs and lows of bipolar disorder.

- You can be happy when depressed and sad when manic.
- You can be sad when depressed and happy when manic.
- You can be happy and sad while depressed, you can be happy and sad while manic.

Sorry Dude, until you're told otherwise by a PDoc, you're probably healthy. :)

All in all, there are some stupid doctors out there.

If the psychologist was unqualified or unregistered to write a prescription, then he gave you a diagnosis that he was not qualified to give.

I submit that it might have been a misunderstanding of language. Some people will 'spitball' and say "I 'think' you might be bipolar so I'm sending you to this dude", which is a different thing from saying "I am diagnosing you as bipolar because you meet the criteria and here's a prescription"

:)

A doctor is supposing to there. He is supposed to tell you what you need then let you go. He is not suppose to take away your freedom by telling you lies or prescribing wrong medications, but the truth is many doctors do this whether they know it or not.

Doctors get all the power of patients and unless you act for yourself you will get nothing. They only want to keep you as a patient taking away your one life, yourself.

There needs to be stricter rules for doctors and patient relation or else you will never get anywhere. Nobody can help and only nobody will do something. The doctor should be held responsible for not keeping in contact with their patients.

Sometimes the doctors will play games, saying one thing and doing another, only to make you suffer.

The bottom line is doctors are not reliable at least this point in time.

I totally agree with you!

My GP recommended I see a pdoc, so I searched and searched, it is so hard to find one that is taking new patients, and I finally found one. During our initial meeting, he listened to my concerns, switched my meds and told me to rebook in 2 weeks.

I came back in 2 weeks and told him I hated the meds and he told me that they shouldn't be making me feel like that, so he added something else, to counter act the adverse reaction. Our session lasted 20 minutes. Again he told me to come back in 2 weeks.

During our first meeting, I told him that I quit seeing my last pdoc because I wanted more than an Rx, I wanted real help. Nevertheless, I got an Rx and was sent on my way.

I can remember asking him what I could do to help calm down during a panic attack. He automatically assumed I wanted some meds and told me that he couldn't prescribe me anything for that due to drug interactions. When I told him that I was not actually looking for meds, but for breathing techniques, etc., he looked at me blankly and said, "Well, something like that takes weeks and weeks of therapy...". Ummm... that is what I thought I was there for. Never did he recommend a therapist, but when I asked for a therapist... he did give me a list of names, "in no particular order" of people that "might" be able to help.

I was late 5 mins late for an appointment and he refused to see me. I was also 5 min late for the appointment after that. Not only did he refuse to see me... but I could hear him yelling about me being late for this and the previous appt. He went on and on yelling at the receptionist about my tardiness, when he went back to his office (slamming the door) the receptionist asked me if I would like to make another appointment. I smiled at her and slid a check for $50.00 to cover my missed appointment fee (which I had filled out during his tantrum) and politely told her that I was able to hear everything he had said and I would never be coming back to his office!

You would think that someone in this sort of profession would first of all be able to control his outbursts and try to find out why his patient is always late. Sounds like someone besides the patients have issues in that office!

Sounds like your just siding with the group you see as powerful.

It may be that some people get some cvomfort from sympathy or other things, but do you really think a person would choose to have their mind ###$?

What do you suggest that a mentally ill person who "want to be helped" should do? Should he/she just swallow zombie pills and go to jail or a hospital when finances don't permit meds?

IMHO "whero" had only bad luck with doctors. Bad doctors exist in everywhere, in all countries of the world, unfortunately.

Whero says it as if all doctors are sadist people, but it by far is not true.

Particularly I got good luck by finding an excellent psychiatrist, circa 2 years ago, with whom I am under treatment since then, and this doctor doesn't "play game", nor "makes me suffer" and nor does any other psychotic stuff. On the contrary I got improved with my ill over 90% I can surely affirm. He always worries with me, always manages the medicines when necessary, and - the most important - always dialogues with me about my mental situation, the medicines and theirs possible adverse effects, bennefic effects etc. He never imposes me anything, especially medicines or treatments that 'may be' somehow harmful.

I totally agree, there are good and there are bad doctors. Each situation is different and should be handled accordingly not just the common seduce the patient under medication. You will mess the patient up mentally. I've had mental problems. I can't remember names as well as I could when I was younger. I understand that this happens as you get older but I noticed a major change in my memory after hospitilization. And who is resposnible??? No it's my fault for going into a mental psychosis. I bet 99% patients are over-medicated.

There needs to be a revolution maybe giving people bananas.

All in all most methods such as over-medication and isolation need to be demolished and docs need to be held responsible for their actions.

I feel like the only way to get the help i need is to pay money i don't have and/or to do something super bad so someone will take me seriously.

I feel generalized. It seems as if they all think I'm being depressed just for attention. It bugs me to no end!

And what they asy helps hasn't.

I wish i could find a competent doctor without becoming homeless and stressing out my dad. :(
