I think it is very complex.
In this society, I think the general population need laws and systems to protect them, inherently.
So for example, if someone is actually very dangerous to other people, it may be justified, in this culture, to forcibly detain them, if they cannot control their violent behaviour.
I would also say, on a deeper level, the only reason that most suicidal or self-harming individuals need to be sectioned, is because not enough funding and public awareness exists, to effectively rehabilitate or protect them otherwise. This is an issue we all could work harder to rectify. But it is an up-hill struggle.
This issue makes me annoyed, personally. But I can somewhat understand the systemic factors which have brought it about. At least it is better, since the movement in the 80s. Previously they'd just have been zapping all our brains with electricity until we shutup lol.
My own serious beliefs, are that nobody should ever have the power to detain and control anyone. But that is not the system we live in.
To stop rambling and put it short: If someone is dangerous and hurts other people, sure, rehab them forcibly if that's what is socially required. But people who are only a threat to themselves? There are far, far better ways to handle it, if people only had the time and resources.
