Bogus "Asperger" Diagnosis? How common?

Postby aks1 » Sat Sep 24, 2022 3:26 am

How common is it to be falsely diagnosed with Autism in the school system? Is there some kind of financial incentive having to do with children being diagnosed?

At age 11 I suspect I was having pretty bad conduct disorder while still displaying "strong special interests" which i have slightly grown out of by now but there is still remnants. However since asperger was eliminated as a diagnosis, and i dont meet the criteria under the DSM, i dont feel at ease saying and believing i have full blown Autism (no sensory issues, stimming, meltdowns) .
How common is it to have early precursors to Schizoid Disorder diagnosed as Autism too?

Sorry if wrong subforum. Maybe the visitors here might have unique insight.

If you think this was a mere misdiagnosis that needs to be revisited or adjusted with further psychological assistance and you have faith in the system, then we might think about moving it elsewhere.

If you think shrinks are generally full of it, or that the system is fundamentally flawed, or that there is some less-than-altruistic motivation going on here, I'd say you're in the right place.

Seems to me the autism spectrum might be a little faddish. NOT to diminish anyone that's been diagnosed with it- I've seen Autism and Asperger's up close and personal and you can't tell me they weren't accurately diagnosed, because those kids were most definitely not neurotypical. But how easy would it be to get labeled that? I'm betting pretty easy.

I could go on about what have been pop-psych fads over the decades, and the Current Thing I shan't mention because it's off-topic makes my blood boil. But yeah I could totally see autism spectrum being over-diagnosed, especially in boys. Either that, or despite the protestations to the contrary, there is a link between thimerosal and autism and those multiple jabs I've watched newborns get fresh out of the womb give some of them more than just protection against infectious diseases.

Partially, but i won't discuss that here. I still dont think the diagnostics/maybe therapy is boof, however i would never want to take psych meds.

I read somewhere about "speech kids" being misdiagnosed as Autism. Is there a financial incentive to schools dxing kids with ASD? Like more funding the more kids with IEP's? That may have been a reason i posted this here.

I got poked as a kid during the thimerosal era. Hope to never poke my kids.

I think for some things they do more good than potential harm, although I will say I'd never give a child an mRNA coof jab. Something's making those kiddos die on the athletic fields. Ain't a damn lab rat.

Well. I'm sure if there's more funding for ASD kids, then that could create an unfortunate incentive, couldn't it? But could that be proved? Don't know.
