Brain Damage due to Neuroleptics (?)

Postby Fml97 » Wed Aug 14, 2019 5:18 pm

Hey There

I have been taking different atypical neuroleptics for almost three years now, and not one single doctor I have been dealing with has ever mentioned that those drugs are suspected to cause brain damage:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3476840/

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfr ... ipsychotic

https://mindfreedom.org/kb/neuroleptic-brain-damage/

these are some examples for research concerning the matter.

I just found out about this today and I am pretty upset for no one ever telling me about the ongoing controversy of the long term side effects of these drugs. Of course there are people who argue that the brain shrinkage measured is due to the condition that is treated with those meds, but there is a lot of reasearch (animal studies for instance) that suggest otherwise. I sometimes asked about long term side effects, but all I heard was "You just gotta check on liver function every now and then but besides that everthing is fine".

Anyway, I just needed to post this in order to relieve myself a little.

Take care.

Hi- Welcome to the forum! I moved your thread to Anti-Psych being a better fit for this topic.

Yes- typically patients are never informed about the long term side effects of these drugs. I never was either except for one private practice doctor who was paid for out of pocket. Any brain changes are attributed to the diagnosed illness at hand- but come reality I have seen and experienced enough to know any claim made by psychiatry is suspect to put it mildly.

I'm sorry you were never informed and finding about this now. Its not fair. Personally I think every patient should be informed of the potential side effects both short term and long term.
