Here's an unspooling podcast about a patient's nearly 30-year relationship with an allegedly highly controlling psychiatrist. The sixth and final episode drops Tuesday, June 11.

I thank you for posting this. I've been busy but saw it now. It is very easy for a psychiatrist or institution to gain unhealthy power over someone especially those who are in need.

The podcast definitely is a cautionary tale. Though my therapists' abuse only was convincing me of their wondrous transformational powers, I still relate to this extreme story of trust and exploitation.

In the podcast's aftermath, the psychiatrist has resigned his faculty position and from the board of an ethics organization. The client finally saw some forward motion from the NY Office of Professional and Medical Conduct three years from the second time he filed a complaint.

One might argue that idolizing the clinician is an important feature of therapy, and some would say it's even encouraged. But how much is said about the contraindications of this fantasy-based relationship?
