Ontario Psychiatric Hospital Tortured Patients

From The Globe and Mail: A judge has recently ruled that patients at a mental health facility in Ontario were tortured by doctors over a 17-year period in unethical and degrading human experiments. Techniques used on patients included solitary confinement, administration of hallucinogens and delirium-producing drugs, and brainwashing methods developed by the CIA.

“Danny Joanisse, now 61, was placed in Oak Ridge just before turning 15, and spent most of the next 34 years inside. One part of his treatment for his borderline personality disorder was ‘the Capsule Program,’ in which up to seven patients were cuffed to one another and placed naked in a small, windowless, continually lit room for days on end, and given food through a straw in the wall.

In an interview, Mr. Joannise described rebelling and being placed in solitary confinement for several days at a time. He said he was tied up in a ‘turkey’ position, with his ankles cuffed to each other and tied to his waist, and left in that position for two weeks. ‘The pain was unbearable,’ he said. ‘All I know is, I’ll never get back what I lost.'”

The doctors being sued said the aim was to force the patients to undergo self-discovery and take responsibility for their behaviour; the drugs were intended to remove their defence mechanisms. Dr. Barker himself, in a paper he published in 1968, raised the spectre of Nazi experiments on human beings and said his own experiments were different.

“If the process were one of eradicating a set of disapproved ideas and washing in different social values, then we would be committing offences as grievous as those involved in setting up the Third Reich – indeed, the more sinister, because of their subtlety.” The difference, he wrote, was that the patients had not chosen their values. “On the other hand, if our patients did not choose to deviate from society’s norms, but rather were driven to such deviations by internal unresolved conflicts, then we should help them to resolve such conflicts by every means at our disposal, including force, humiliation and deprivation, if necessary.”

Appalling indeed. This statement is pretty much the perfect, truthful synopsis of institutional psychiatry they don't want you to know about. The truth which gets covered in lies, empathetic terms and sugar coated rhetoric. And in truth the reasoning behind it has been the heart of psychiatry for over 100 years. Suddenly all the torture and brain disabling treatment makes sense in terms of why it was being pulled off and in theory still is. It has to be the definition of insanity: using torture and disablement on the already tormented and disabled all the while convincing yourself you are somehow superior to other forms of evil which do exactly the same.

So much more I could say but I will leave it at that for now.

In essence, they see us as less than human, and therefore in their eyes we have no human rights, and no freedom to make our own decisions and choices.

Sadly this mindset is nothing new: slavery in all its many forms through thousands of years of human history had this mindset, the Nazis had this mindset, and psychiatry still has this mindset but it cloaks itself in science and masquarades about as if it is somehow here to help us.

I know it's just a t.v. show, but Dr. Arden on American Horror Story Asylum seems even more plausible after reading this.That season sure demonstrated some of the abusive nature of psychiatry.

I agree- they must come out. The public needs to know about this, otherwise such corruption will continue.

Hopefully we will know the final outcome soon.

In American Horror Story: Asylum, the character Kit Walker was wrongly accused and ended up in a psych ward and was subjected to inhumane treatment and treated like a guinea pig for science experiments by a former Nazi doctor. He was subjected to forced drugging and then some...

At least the age of the internet has made it much more difficult for these monsters to stay off the radar and keep secrets.

We all saw the Judge Rottenberg shock video and the place is still open and no one went to prison for what they did to that kid.

I agree, and with that people can finally see the legalized torture that takes place behind close doors, giving the helpless a voice they were denied.

However, just look at the name of the center. "Rotenberg" Basically two words (rotten and berg) fused together, ie a rotten iceburg or a rotten fortress- something someone would pickup looking closely at the name.

Yes its said this happens to be the name of an actual judge who saved the program, but it serves its purpose none the less. I've noticed places that have a history of accused abuse often have names, pictures, reviews, other subtle oddities that present an ominous tone when taken literally. I can't help but think this is how psychiatrists, the rich and other people in the loop were alerted that a place was not in their best interest or for their children. Its said MKUltra and other immoral programs quietly did their thing at countless institutions, so I'd imagine those behind it managed to also create system to alert informed people of places that partook in un-consenting experimentation and torture. I mean I would be stunned if they hadn't come up with a covert alert considering how nearly every other criminal cartel have developed covert methods of communication and advertisement.

Yup- which speaks in of itself. That fact hints we have a system designed to sabotage those deemed unworthy by the powers that be.
