A Long Island woman’s insistence that President Obama follows her on Twitter made doctors at the Harlem Hospital psych ward think she was delusional and suffering from bipolar disorder — but she was actually telling the truth, a lawsuit charges.

Psychiatrists don't know what the hell they are talking about.

This is a perfect and may I add typical example of psychiatrists being incapable of distinguishing between sanity and insanity. This is also a perfect example of forced commitment without legitimate proof, and a perfect example of constitutional rights being flushed down the toilet.

Even if the person was lying about Twitter with proof (they were not and no proof existed at the time they were) that still does not mean anything. No employment means nothing, 5.8% is the national average for unemployment in the USA with some areas around 21% according to Google. Economy and immigration play a huge role in this, a persons individual sanity has nothing to do with that. Top it off with what appears to be talent and a serious passion to make it big I see nothing wrong, rather everything right.


I can only imagine the abuse, harassment and degradation she received from staff in order to get her to say "Obama does not follow me" when she knows that 100% he does on twitter along with countless other tech savvy people who know its more than possible. It would not be difficult for me to believe if she was trying to clear up the misunderstanding only to be cut off with an arrogant reply. Stressing education on what appears to be a bright and talented person is insulting too. Being treated like that can make someone insane. Its emotional torture, nothing less.

Staff in places like this will take any length to get patients to think what they want them to think and say what they want them to say.

And don't even get me started in chemical rape which I find hard to believe was even close to justifiable

Differentiating between sanity and insanity is not a concern Psychiatric facilities. The system is designed to get as many people committed as possible because every hospital bed filled is profit and ever medication dose given is income to pharma. What other business rakes in $13,637.10 in 8 days for just one person? That number speaks louder than words. The hospital should pay her $13,637.10 for misdiagnosis, harassment, chemical rape and false commitment.

This type of crime happens every day without any any publicity or charges being filed.

What I stopped to think about was, would it be that hard to go on twitter to check whether she's telling the truth? They thought it was better to drug her etc.

I don't know whether anyone is interested in this, but when I was at a hospital I was kept there against my will longer because, well, the doctor said I couldn't go home because I'm schizophrenic. I think I really am, but that can't be a reason, can it? She didn't give me any more info on why she was keeping me there. Before that she said she thinks I'll stop taking medication at home, which she had no rational basis for. Not as bad as what happened to the woman in the article, but still unpleasant when it happens to you.

That is what blows my mind. Then again when you have people conditioned to see everything as part of an illness condemnation without investigation becomes an autonomous status quo.

I guess it could be a reason if you were hallucinating to the point where you might harm yourself or someone else, but I think you deserved a more detailed answer. And that was a poor excuse IMO. However I get you, unless you live through it first hand the telling the story latter is nothing.

I hope you don't have any more experiences like that.

I see no reason why you should have stayed then. They should have let you go.

IMO, In a perfect world a person would only be forced into commitment if they were an immediate threat to themselves or others beyond a reasonable doubt. And I am not saying that lightly, real proof would have to exist, not just some shrink saying "well I think he might be dangerous"
