My observations from Australia

Postby Illin » Thu Feb 12, 2015 7:54 am

Hi, I am pretty indifferent in my views of psychiatry or psychology but I see most posters here are not from Australia and I thought I may as well share.

I have seen many psychologists in my life and I find they are very anti psychiatry and do not like labelling at all, a friend of mine suffers from schizophrenia and years ago had seen a licensed and registered psychologist who never pointed it out but re-assured him to live a positive life without any suggestion of medication. In the short term my friend seemed better but years later is pretty much the same as he was before therapy.

Something that may interest some of you. Regarding the whole Psychology not being a science thing, I have raised this with a professor or psychology and he specifically said screw science.

My experience with psychiatry was also similar to another friend who has problems with drug abuse, they seem to be the opposite of psychologists in that they try label you with as much as possible however seemingly unlike the US they are a bit more reserved with the amount of medications they trial here.

A few things they both share in common is that their benchmark for success seems to be to get the patient functioning in society, in other words working.
They do care for interpersonal issues too and give motivation to lead a more positive lifestyle but the main objective is for pro-social behaviour both interpersonally and for society but more the latter.
