eye doctor asking inappropriate question

Postby Mister_J » Thu Sep 04, 2014 3:21 pm

I have a bad experience with psychiatry. You can read my story in one of those other topics.
Recently I had an eye infection and visited a local eye doctor. The first question she asked, was: do you take anti psychotics?
That doctor is a friend of some family members so she must have heard something about me. If she would have asked: do you take medication? No problem, it's the right question for any doctor to ask, but the fact that she asked that anti-psychotic question was very inappropriate. I didn't say anything, paid and went on, but is it normal that I feel offended because she based that question on gossip?

I agree with Copy_Cat. That's not really an inappropriate question for any medical doctor to be asking. Every medication has side effects, so it's best to know. Not to mention, anti-psychotics can mess with your eyes a lot.

Here in the states all doctors ask, do you take meds? Perhaps there was a better way the phrase it.

I personally don't think it was inappropriate. There could've been an underlying reason. My optometrist asked what medication I was taking and one being an anti-psychotic, she then asked further questions about it.

Hey Mister_J,

I have no idea why the doctor asked that question, but understood why it felt troubling to be asked that question first. Yes, I think most people would react better to a more general question of "do you take medications?", then list them, etc.
