Sorry the reply is long, but this post is so relevant. I have been in California's foster care for 2 years now. I was admitted to a psychiatric hospital for a 5th time and CPS finally decided it was time for residential treatment and intensive foster care as for my own home is "unsafe and not meeting my psychiatric needs".
They kept me at basically a homeless shelter for at risk teens awaiting group homes/foster ect. [*** mod edit***] The usual wait time 2-4 weeks to be placed. I was there for 11+ months.
In that time about 6 months into my involuntary stay, I was offered a group home 3+ hours away from my school, and most importantly family. Their only issue was that in order to be placed at their level 14/12 group home for girls [*** mod edit***], it was highly recommended (and mandatory in some of their residential homes) to be on some sort of medication.
Do you see the dilemma? I was taken away from my home, and the only option to leave a homeless shelter was to be placed on medication and be sent away from my family! What about family therapy? How about not give me a mood altering medicine? Gee, thanks California. I was put on Lamictal by the way.
Furthermore, that placement NOT working out (surprise?) led me back to [*** mod edit***], where I lacked a psychiatrist, (I saw him once in a 7 month span of medication). Finally I was led to [*** mod edit***]. I was placed in a home (again, medication mandatory, and if not on it, a psychiatrist completely mandatory.). Long story summed up, they were completely abusive: the father barged himself into my room when I wouldn't let him in, they looked through my items when I was at school ($40 missing, wow how shocking), they both physically abused their adopted 5 year old and 9 year old, and they were both addicted to gambling (yes, my foster money I assume was used), and then when I brought this up to CPS, do you want to know what they cried?
"Her medication isn't working. She's paranoid. She's hearing things. Remove her, now. Get her a new one."
Now placed at my aunts on long term stay, I'm still having trouble finding the right medication. I've tried 6 different antidepressants before V of the M, and Lamictal seems to be bland and unresponsive, great. I think I'll try no medications for now and see what it does.
All in all, yes! Very over drugged and mandatory! As a [*** mod edit***] year old girl with hormones and menstrual cycles raging already like many other foster teens, this is not the best option!! Maybe if they provided sufficient therapy, counseling, non abusive and overflowed living corridors, psychiatric medications wouldn't be as needed!
Thank you for reading, I as a over drugged foster youth can second this post's truth.
