Antipsychotics induced anhedonia and/or emotional flattening

Postby mctps » Wed Apr 30, 2014 5:51 pm

Does anyone have any personal experiences with this topic? I'm curious especially about whether you were able to recover your normal functioning or emotional life some time after stopping med use. If so, how long did you use the meds and how long did it take to recover?

Also, are there people here who have been on antipsychotics for more than a year but have a normal emotional life?

I been on and off zyprexa for about 10 years. In my case I don't think the damage was permanent.

In any case for the effects and withdrawl to pass you need at least a month.

I experienced anhedonia really bad on a few different medications in the past. I almost think anhedonia is worse than depression. After stopping the medications though, after a few months my emotions came back to a more "normal" level.

Do you mean on, or off? I am on them and I feel rather emotionally "normal" for the most part. As for off of them, for me personally, I usually get to the one year mark and then things start to get really off track. There are people here though, as well as in the larger community that have not taken medications for several years and are doing very well emotionally.

Oops, now that I read that part again it seems very ambiguous. I meant if there were people here who can use antipsychotics for long periods of time without experiencing flattened emotions or anhedonia.

Thanks for the responses.
