Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

Postby Twister » Wed Apr 16, 2014 6:46 pm

I want to inquire whether anyone has used this form of treatment as a result of not getting along with tablets. In the UK there is only apparently one place in London that is using this new form of treatment for depression and other mental disorders. It involves sending magnetic pulses into the brain and consists of a series of treatments each lasting about 20 mins. I am very intrigued as I find antidepressants limited in their use and I'm not a big fan of counselling/therapy. Maybe you have heard of someone who has benefited from TMS. I'm interested to know your views.

They offer it at my local community mental health center. To be honest, no one has ever mentioned it to me other than me seeing the sign in the office that they have it. That makes me think that if it really worked that well, they would be telling all of their patients about it. Since they are not...well, you get the idea.

Cheze-

They might not have mentioned it to you because they might not feel it's indicated for you. My psychiatrist and I discussed it last year and he let me know that it could make me manic, and wasn't indicated for me.

They've since begun treatments in the office, and we've revisited the topic. He still seems to feel that for BP1, it's just too dicey.

FWIW, I do like and trust my psychiatrist.

Seems like the jury is out on this one. I think it needs further investigation.
