Two years later, family remembers teen killed by police officer

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

It has been two years since Mark Wilsey and his daughter Chelsea lost their son and brother, Keith Vidal. Vidal was 18 years old when he was shot and killed by a police officer.

"It doesn't get better, you just learn to live with it," explained Mark Wilsey, Vidal's father, "Keith is never coming back."

It is a story that made national headlines. Former Southport police officer Bryon Vassey shot and killed Vidal inside of his family's home in Boiling Springs Lake.

Trial date set for detective accused in teen’s shooting death

The verdict ended the criminal case against Bryon Vassey for the 2014 death of Keith Vidal, 18.

“I’m thankful for God,” Vassey said. “I’m thankful for my family, and I’m thankful for the justice system.”

After 14 days in court and more than two years in limbo Vassey had few words at a Friday afternoon news conference in Wilmington hours after a judge found him not guilty. It’s the first time Vassey has spoken publicly outside of court since the Jan. 5, 2014, shooting that killed Vidal.
