Unfortunately Gaslighting by mental health professionals is more common than you think. I have been a victim of this from my counselor and am currently in litigation about this matter.
I have studied Gaslighting in depth. Understanding how gaslighters think is the key to protecting yourself in the future. They desire power and are drawn to positions of power. Police, judges, counselors, doctors and lawyers just to name some. When they speak of emotions, it’s a “matter of fact” tone of voice that gives them away. They can not fathom how anyone else feels and carry a deeply rooted sense of entitlement.
However, people without the capacity for empathy play a vital role in our society. Not all** of the people who do these jobs are sociopaths** but trauma nurses, vets that put animals down, morticians, corners just to name a few. Please note I did not say everyone with these jobs and please don’t take offense.
Having 15 months of counseling records and sorting fact from fiction was very traumatic for me. Since picking it apart and filing a law suit, I have come to the conclusion that gaslighters are truly not aware of their behavior. Their memory is horrible, they forget things just as soon as they do them. If my counselor couldn’t remember what he had for breakfast, how can he possibly remember anything from my session? He would tell me one thing, and then record the opposite.
They have very black and white thinking and do not believe something unless it has a yes or no answer, 0 or 1.
If you feel like you have been the victim of Gaslighting or do not “click” with your counselor, change immediately without hesitation. Do not feel guilty, they won’t give you a second thought.
