America isn't big on personal responsibility. Japan's much more admirable. When an airliner went down killing all aboard due to a mechanical error, the engineer responsible commited ritual suicide. That's an admirable culture. :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan_Airlines_Flight_123

"On Monday, August 12, 1985, the Boeing 747SR that made this route, registered JA8119, suffered mechanical failures 12 minutes into the flight and 32 minutes later crashed into two ridges of Mount Takamagahara in Ueno, Gunma Prefecture, 100 kilometers (62 mi) from Tokyo. The crash site was on Osutaka Ridge (御巣鷹の尾根, Osutaka-no-One?), near Mount Osutaka. All 15 crew members and 505 out of 509 passengers died, resulting in a total of 520 deaths and 4 survivors."

"Aftermath

Rumors persisted that Boeing had admitted fault to cover up shortcomings in the airline’s inspection procedures and thus protect the reputation of a major customer. Without admitting liability, JAL paid 780 million yen to the victims’ relatives in the form of “condolence money”. Its president, Yasumoto Takagi, resigned and a number of JAL employees and one Boeing employee committed suicide to “apologize” for the accident."

A Philadelphia jury yesterday ordered Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Janssen to pay $11 million to the parents of a five-year-old boy for failure to warn doctors of potential birth defects associated with its epilepsy drug Topamax. “Janssen knew about Topamax’s serious risk of causing birth defects years before these mothers were prescribed the drug, but did not advise physicians of those risks,”

Of course no jail time for anyone. When the lawsuits roll in from patients with children with birth defects, they simply use a small portion of their windfall profits to pay a fine.

Pfizer Settles Chantix Lawsuit: Keeps CEO Off the Stand

January 16, 2013

One week before its court date, Pfizer settled with plaintiff Billy G. Bedsole Jr., who claims that Chantix triggered his suicidal thoughts and other psychiatric problems. The case is the first of more than 2,600 consolidated in U.S. District Court in Alabama. Pfizer CEO had been ordered to take the stand.

When the lawsuits roll in from the families of patients, simply use a small portion of your massive profits to settle out of court, admitting no guilt.

Pfizer Loses Appeal of Neurontin

December 11, 2013

On Monday the U.S. Supreme Court rejected Pfizer’s appeal of a $142 million award to the Kaiser Foundation for illegal marketing of Neurontin. The ruling allows cases involving millions of off-label prescriptions to move forward. According to plaintiffs, internal Pfizer documents and emails show the company knew the drug was not effective for the marketed purposes, and referred to it as “the ‘snake oil’ of the twentieth century.” According to Pfizer the decision, which did not require proof that the company’s marketing affected prescriptions by individual doctors, could lead to “an unlimited escalation in RICO and related cases against pharmaceutical companies for off-label promotion using the shortcut of aggregate proof.”

Check this out,

China has executed the former head of its food and drug watchdog who became a symbol of the country's product safety crisis when he was convicted of taking bribes to approve flawed medicine blamed for several deaths.

The execution of former State Food and Drug Administration chief Zheng Xiaoyu was confirmed by state television and the official Xinhua News Agency.

The few corrupt officials of the SFDA are the shame of the whole system and their scandals have revealed some very serious problems," agency spokeswoman Yan Jiangyang said at a news conference held to highlight efforts to improve China's track record on food and drug safety.

Pharmaceutical manufacturer Teva Pharmaceuticals USA Inc. and a subsidiary, IVAX LLC, have agreed to pay the government and the state of Illinois $27.6 million for allegedly violating the False Claims Act by making payments to induce prescriptions of an anti-psychotic drug for Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries . Teva Pharmaceuticals USA is located in North Wales, Pa., and IVAX LLC is a Florida company.

said Assistant Attorney General for the Justice Department’s Civil Division Stuart F. Delery. “Schemes such as the one alleged in this case undermine the health care system and take advantage of vulnerable patients.”

Is there a specific law that you can identify that states that these types of suits require imprisonment? I'm just wondering if the punishment for these crimes are not listed as jail time but rather sums of money, such as when someone is sued.
