Sparks middle school shooting SSRIs or Mental illness ?

Authorities have yet to figure out what motivated a 12-year-old boy to open fire at a Nevada middle school early Monday, killing a mathematics teacher and wounding two boys before taking his own life.

Was he put on and taking psychiatric drugs ?

Will he be listed on http://www.ssristories.com ?

This connection between psychotropic drugs and mass murder is not coincidental. There is enough evidence that antidepressants cause increased risk of suicide and violence for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and its Canadian counterpart to require that drug companies include a “black box” warning to that effect on their packages. Our first knowledge of this association between psychotropic drugs and violence came from studies completed in the early 1950s, (8). This was supported by research completed on antidepressants in the mid-1970s, (9). More recent studies have corroborated this association between antidepressants and homicide/suicide, (10, 17). Antidepressants, specifically Paxil, appear to more than double the risk of hostility events in adult and pediatric placebo-controlled trials (11).

All of the classes of psychiatric drugs can cause violent, irrational, and/or manic behavior. Among other effects, these drugs cause a neurological condition called “akathesia,” which means that persons who take them can’t sit still and feel like they are jumping out of their skin. They behave in an agitated manner which they cannot control and experience unbearable rage, delusions, and disassociation.

I'm looking at http://www.ssristories.com/index.php?p=school and I don't see the last few psych med school shooters listed yet.

Anyway ,T.V news refuses to ask one the simple question , what psychiatric drug was the sparks middle school shooter taking or withdrawing from? because after asking that question, taking station breaks for advertisements for brain disabling "Abilify" and drugs like it, might give big media editors and producers indigestion, since their very existence depends on Big Pharma sponsorship.

Neither. Society and modern culture constitutes the soil in which the seed of violence sends forth its shoots. Divorced from their proper context, these acts may seem "insane" or pharmacologically caused, especially to a mind at the mercy of scapegoating impulses, or one especially invested in the maintenance of the status quo and the scapegoating of a surrogate victim (which applies to practically everyone because we are all implicated to varying degrees in the problems of society, a society ruthlessly competitive, narcissistic, rude, destructive, and nihilistic, although you won't get any rewards for this, because most people are so rude and cynical, so mired in the gutter, they'll just project onto you that which is too disturbing for admittance into their own consciousness). Although I am not that complacent as to assume I have all the answers (unlike most people on this debate), my guess would be that these individuals had accumulated a lot resentments that culminated in the explosion of violence we saw. They weren't crazy, and if they were, they were probably driven crazy by the fact that everyone around them, rather than acknowledging their humanity, and the true reasons for their suffering and inner violence that found expression in those killings, was only interested in increasing their burden of anger and suffering by scapegoating them for the ills of a dysfunctional society, which surely would have only further whetted their appetite for revenge on a society that always scapegoats others for its problems, and then scratches its head, seemingly non-plussed at the corollary of this scapegoating (revenge). Out of this state of confusion people grope in the dark for any conventional simplicity that from their hallucinatory perspective seems to bridge the gulf between their ignorance and the reality, not because they are stupid, but because their expertise lies elsewhere.

The problem, is every society seems to be preponderantly made up of people who think its perfect, that its inhabitants are the beneficiaries of true progress, andhave arrived at some preordained historical goal, so that anyone who is maladjusted must be "mad"! The truth is otherwise. Posterity will look back on our generation with disgust at how such narcissism, disrespect, hypocrisy, ignorance, stupidity and nihilism could possibly have arrogated to itself such honors, whilst no doubt making the exact same mistakes.

Where's all the indignation about what goes in on mental hospitals? Oh of course, society has a monopoly on "good violence", even though most of that violence is committed against people entirely innocent of wrongdoing. The reason why we bury this violence in an almost impenetrable thicket of linguistic deceptions, casuistries, and propaganda is because we couldn't in good conscience commit such violence if we called it what it is, and couldn't maintain our delusions of righteousness.

Wouldn't hold your breath. CNN, MSNBC, Fox, and others show ads for headmeds so I seriously doubt they're ever gonna cover that angle of the story.

Good post. I don't advise violence and I have been strong enough so far to not result to violence but seriously someone in your face claiming you have a mental problem or handle things in a way in which they don't like only fuels the fire. Especially when they intentionally overlook facts just to express opinions.

"Interviews with the boy's parents, teachers and classmates and the boy's own writings paint a portrait of a child troubled by depression and feelings of inadequacy at home and tormented by a school life in which he was mocked, teased and mistreated.

Some warning signs were there. His father had taken him to a psychotherapist just three days before the shooting and the doctor proscribed an antidepressant after the boy told of being teased at school, called "gay" and accused of peeing in his pants. His mother had done research on autism after Jose showed signs of it."
