President Obama called for a national mental health discussion a while ago and here are the details. It has the chance to be a dog and pony show as our peers were excluded from part of the planning process (making the discussion guide). But the organization that is running this has now recognized that problem and is working to balance different viewpoints on mental health. Here is their recent webinar talking about different points of view in mental health. I’ve been working on this project for two years, and if we jump on it now, we have a chance to really get heard. Here is also more information on the deliberative democracy approach that they are using.

The national mental health dialogues are listed here. http://creatingcommunitysolutions.org/. If you can’t get to one of the talks, there is also an online discussion. Spread the word – we need 10-15 psych survivors in each city to get critical mass. Most of these discussions are limiting Mental Health provider spots because they want to hear from people in the community like US. This is a once in a long time chance to challenge the status quo.

I should try to be a part of this, I'm going back to read more.

Ive read about this to and it really is a once in a longtime chance to let Obama know about altlernatives and how horrible the current mental illness system is. Please do join in copy cat , I don't know if I can since im in Australia, but pls everyone who can, make the effort to join into this and BE HEARD, every persons statement counts with this as he is looking for chances to make changes on what really needs to be done. Obama cant make the changes if he only hears from drug companies and mainstream psych supporters! Please tell him your thoughts!

When did a president, or just about any politician discussing the issue of "mental health" ever manifest itself for the good of the patient, especially the victim of forced psychiatry? Politicians, when it comes down to this issue, are only interested in propitiating the wrath of the scapegoating herd, who demand, as part of the quid pro quo implicit in relations between society and the rulers, that in return for the power they have given them, they kowtow to the every prejudice, delusion, and lunacy of said herd. Politicians are just weathercocks blowing in the winds of popular opinion and prejudice, at least when it comes down to things like policy. Politicians are too busy fellating the mass phallus to be relied upon to help those who really need it, such as the scapegoats of society.

Have you heard of the President's New Freedom Commission on Mental Health? It is a huge step forward. It does mention the coercive nature of the mental health system as a barrier to obtaining services. It also is the first government document that defines recovery in mental health.

I know, people fear the locked doors of psychiatry just like I did when I went to the E.R. I really wanted some help with the panic attacks caused by the medication I was taking and not reacting so well too. I would stop at the liquor store and down a half pint just to be able to endure the get in the gown strip search, wallet cigarette and clothing confiscation followed by the wait in unknown amount of "observation" (detention) part of the abusive process that goes with anything psychiatric.

Those panic attacks I used to get were bad, the liquor hardly touched it. I really believed I had panic disorder for a long time before figuring out all those crazy med combos were screwing me up 100 times more than they ever helped with anything.
I survived psychiatry.
