Why shouldn't psychiatry be banned?

Postby namismybabe » Sun Mar 10, 2013 12:33 am

Psychiatry has no benevolent centre, unlike most of the Western medical tradition. It is a dishonest practice, based on quackery and subjective opinions. All the following points apply to mental health professionals:

- they enter the vocation due to a need to control
- they live in a social bubble, and don't understand the general norms of society
- they have no genuine desire to assist people

Is there a logical reason why psychiatry shouldn't be banned?

I guess it's around cause there are plenty of people who DO want the drugs, whole websites of people who are happy to be fed that stuff, maybe they don';t know yet what they're in for when they eventually have to come off them, maybe they are just so desperate for some relief and the drugs give them that relief. Because of these people the psychiatry enterprise feels justified, I think the pdocs genuinely think they are helping some people, even though they do know that there are down sides to the help they are offering, they just think it's better than nothing. Not in every case though, in some we'd be better off wiht nothing.

Because people have choice and free will. They have the option to choose to go the route of psychiatry or to choose other options. Just because some people have found psychiatry harmful, doesn't mean that all people have. Some people are willing to choose to take the risk of medication, along with it's side effects to hopefully gain relief from certain kinds of emotional distress. It is their choice to make these kinds of informed decisions.

Choice and free will ?

I see you have not been subject to there locked doors and coerced drugging. I was clueless when I fell into the psych trap by taking there first pills. I realy belived I had low seratonin and it made sence to take a few pills to raise it. I didn't know how dangerous these pills were and how my reaction to them would lead to more pills and then finaly the withdrawal reactions of these chemical lobatamys would land me behind the locked doors of inpatient psychiatry to be threatend with violence (forced drugging). I didnt know they would call my withdrawal reactions new disorders to justify there barberic actions.

Mabey some want to help and heal but many are butchers and hope If they don't get whats coming to them in this life they get it in the hereafter for the pain and suffing the cause there fellow man to make a buck.

Actually, I have.

I understand that there are flaws in the system, particularly in the area you bring up such as a court order for medication, or involuntary hospitalization. That doesn't mean that ALL of psychiatry should be banned. Many people do find these routes to be helpful. Many people are not subjected to forced drugging and involuntary admissions but are choosing to opt for the route that psychiatry takes. We can't deny these people their right to that choice just because some people have been harmed. What we can do is advocate for those who have been harmed and to try to change the way that the current system is run so that choice isn't taken away from people such as the current system is permitting.

You have been subject to coerced drugging ?

Coercion is the practice of forcing another party to act in an involuntary manner (whether through action or inaction) by use of threats or intimidation or some other form of pressure or force. In law, coercion is codified as the duress crime. Such actions are used as leverage, to force the victim to act in the desired way. Coercion may involve the actual infliction of physical pain/injury or psychological harm in order to enhance the credibility of a threat. The threat of further harm may lead to the cooperation or obedience of the person being coerced.

In my case they threatened a chemical rape, forced injection by over powering me and injecting an unwanted substance into my body.

What was the method of coersion used on you ?

I have added not only medication, but also the psychiatric society in general. These are only the first few that came to mind.

Coercion through fraud: I have been told like many people ,that I have a genetic predisposition that has caused me to have a chemical imbalance. I was given the line “Just like someone who is diagnosed with diabetes, you have to take your medication everyday for the rest of your life.”

I have been told that I would not be allowed to leave the hospital unless I were actively taking the medication prescribed to me regardless of side effects as those would "go away" in time.

Coercion through fear: I have been threatened with involuntary emergency admission and told that the judge always follows the recommendations of the mental health professionals and would not listen to my requests to be released so I shouldn't even bother trying to fight it.

During times I have been hospitalized, I have been told by nurses that if I did not comply with certain requests/demands that I would be put into seclusion or restraints and given an injection without my consent. (And this has happened on a few occasions).

I have also been told (and have had happen) that I would have all of the belongings removed from my room except a mattress and not be allowed to come out unless I became "better" ie. not suicidal. At this time I was unable to check myself out as I was underage.

I stand corrected,

Nothing like getting abused in the name of help. Have you every noticed when someone is getting psychiatric abuse in the name of help they cry out the word " HELP ! ".

Alot of people are in it because they care and that they genuinely do want to help patients. Also, I think that its something that should be improved upon. It's not a perfect science. Though it should be better acknowledged that its a young science still.

Psychiatry is a pseudoscience http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-psychiatry

There is no scientific evidence that any of the millions of people labeled with "mental disorders" have any physical abnormality that justifies the diagnosis, and because of this, psychiatrists cannot agree on who is sick and who is well. Yet, despite this inept psychiatric diagnostic system, worldwide sales of psychotropic drugs prescribed to treat "mental disorders," including stimulants, antipsychotics and antidepressants, now exceed $80 billion annually.
