Good and evil is found in all arenas of life, even in psychiatry. Try a masters' level therapist (who is licensed). Keep looking till you find a jewel. They are out there. :)

Well, I would say that it depends on the doctors.

In my case, my first visit to a psychiatric hospital and seeing a psychiatrist (basically there were 3 of them hearing me) I just told them the *HARD FACTS* and they prescribed me with some seroxat and tavor for my panic attacks.

I bought them but didn't take them at all because I wanted to get a second opinion, I searched for the best psychiatrist in town and got there where he talked to me for like 2+ hours and in the end he didn't prescribe anything to me not even a psychologist/therapist.

He just offered me some (very good) advice and told me to go on and i'll be better and not to worry about it. But he said, in the meantime if i feel that i need it, he could get me on to therapy (psychological) to help me a bit more.

I said to him "please prescribe me some pills, just to feel a little safe having them on my cardboard". How can someone accuse this doctor of being drug biased?

So again, I think it depends on the psychiatrist.

Personally, I've had two bad experiences with psychologists and one not so bad experience with a psychiatrist.

They're both egoist in my opinion. If you find one that is helpful I'd consider it a rarity

As has been said there are good psychiatrists and bad psychiatrists just as there are good and bad in all professions. I think part of the problem is how we view mental illness today.

There was a time when mental illness was believed to be caused by demons. At another time it was thought to be caused by sexual thoughts. Society and science are always changing. Today, the current belief is that chemicals in our brains need adjusting if we have mental illness. Much evidence supports this for many patients. However, there is much evidence that does not support the idea, but we never hear much about it.

1. All studies show a large placebo effect for antidepressants. In many cases a sugar pill works better than the drug that is being tested.

2. The effects on brain chemicals are quick, yet the relief of depression if there is to be one often takes weeks. This is a major scientifc problem that needs to be explained.

3. Many people are not helped by drugs. The best and biggest study proves that only 1 out of 3 get help when taking their first medicine. Eventually 2/3 will get help, but there is still a third who do not get help. Ads in magazines and on television want us to believe that all are helped.

4. Drug companies rake in huge profits by having us believe that relief is just one little pill away.

5. We all want to believe that relief is just one pill away. We want help to be quick and easy.

6. We do not want to feel negative emotions. We do not want to be sad or grieve. We want a new order where no one is sad--everyone is happy all the time.

Aren't you guys throwing the baby out with the bathwater when you say that just because you or people you knew had bad experiences with psychiatrists in the past, the whole field of psychiatry is wrong/fraudulent?

I mean, that's like me saying that my GP sexually molested me so now I'm going to advocate that everybody stop believing in hospitals from now on and recommend to all my friends that they invest in leeches.

many people are skeptical about the science behind homeopathy, but compared with the total lack of scientific evidence behind psychiatry, there both on a par.

one thing though, homeopathy is far less dangerous for your health than psychiatry and many people swear by it.
The administration of poisons to lure the body's natural defence mechanisms into combating problems similar to the effects of the poison just ingested is less dangerous than sitting in a chair and crying about your mother for an hour?

I would also asssume most psychs do understand the suffering of mental and emotional turmoil. Not just because they studied it, but also because the sole dominating reason most people study psychology is to sort out their own problems. Very few of the do-gooder 'I want to help people' types are attracted to psychiatry.
