Having lived it and seen what goes on , I would say 19 out of 20 times the danger to self and others thing is used to keep people inpatient till their insurance runs out. The same people making $1000 + dollars a day per bed are the ones deciding who is 'sick' and who is well and can leave.

Danger to self and others, here are some other common lies:

I'm late because my alarm didn't go off.
I'm a social drinker. I can stop anytime I want to.
I'm from the government. I'm here to help you.
I promise to pay you back out of my next paycheck.
Sorry the work isn't ready. The computer broke down.
