Stomach aches?

Postby charlietherese » Mon Nov 07, 2016 6:50 pm

My boyfriend is a (very slowly, but there's progress I think) anorexic and he complains about stomach aches basically everyday. Usually it's after he eats (which kinda makes sense because his stomach is not used to bigger amounts of food) but for example today he hasn't eaten as much as in the last couple of days yet still has this over full kind of stomach ache. I'm no professional in this area and I'm kind of starting to worry there might be something unrelated to his eating disorder going on with his stomach. Has anybody experienced something similar?

Could be ulcers, could be a bezoar - could be a dozen different things that are known to develop in the stomach of a person who has anorexia. Look up the term "gastroparesis" on Google. It is a secondary condition that develops from anorexia but also from eating disorders in general. The pain usually manifests shortly after eating. This might be what is causing his aches.

You might as well look up the effects of anorexia on the stomach. Depending on the kind of person he is, how he developed anorexia (you don't seem sure whether he has it) and what his attitude about it is, this information can help him to change his attitude about it. Obviously, after you have done your research, the next step should be seeing a doctor before jumping to conclusions. If he does have some kind of stomach condition, the best person to diagnose it and also to explain it to him is a doctor. If he has never talked to a doctor about anorexia, that is another good reason to see a doctor.

In any case, don't freak out about what you might read. We tend to try to armchair diagnose ourselves and others, but at least half the time, the conditions we are convinced we have are not at all what we really have. Remind yourself that we tend to always fear the worst when reading up on possible causes of symptoms, even the most psychologically healthy among us. A doctor's visit can also serve to reassure you.

It may be gastric re-action and it may reach ulcer problem. Basically, I know that when someone did not take food in just time then they are suffer from gastric and gastric makes stomach aches. So please tell your boyfriend to takes his meal in right time and quickly go to a doctor.

Stomach probably isn't used to food, but I don't know.

I know I experience stomach aches every now and then and I restrict and fast.

He needs to be seen by a doctor to rule out any medical issues first. Could be a food intolerance, allergy, a doctor should have a look at him before guessing at things.

I've had an ED for 12 years now starting with an EDNOS diagnosis that has now the last 5 years changed to an Anorexia diagnosis. I was also suffering (and still am) with stomach pains pretty much daily, sometimes to the point where I throw up. I really recommend your boyfriend goes to the doctors asap .. for me it turned out to be stomach ulcers and gastric problems due to my ED I now have meds for it and it helps, now I am at least not scared of eating because I'll be in pain which is one less thing to worry about :) ...also getting to the root of his stomach pain and getting that fixed might possibly help him continue going forward with recovering :)

wishing you both the best of luck! :D
