The therapist I went to for "anger management" said I did not have an anger problem and we spent all the sessions shooting the bull!

Most Therapists are not trained in anger management

Postby George Anderson, BCD » Sat Apr 16, 2005 3:39 pm

There is a 99% chance that your therapist has absolutely no training or experience in anger management. He or she does not realize that problems in managing anger are not relatated to nervous or mental disorders. (psychopthology)
Currently, anger management is not being taught in in Masters, Doctoral or Medical school programs. Consequently, you sought help from a person who lacks the training and intervention material to be helpful.
Anger is a normal human emotion. It is a problem when it occurs too frequently, lasts too long, is too intense or leads to aggressive behavior. Chances are ,the Judge sent you to anger management because your anger led to aggressive behavior.
Anger managment is a class which should begin with an assessment for the client's level of functioning in four areas: [b]anger, stress, emotional intelligence and communications. An anger management class should teach skills in these areas and give the student a post test to determine if he learnded skills in these areas.
I reccommend that you visit the website of the American Association of Anger Management Providers at www.angermanagementproviders.com for a list nationwide of trained anger management providers.
