Help for my brother

Postby help » Sun Apr 23, 2006 4:02 am

My brother is 41 and has been diagnosed with bi-polar. We have a history of depression in our family and our mother is bi-polar too. My brother lives with me and is unable to sustain employment or get any job with a temp agency. He graduated from a good university in the Midwest with a degree in Finance. He's battling a lot of anger and it comes out often. I am a single 47 y.o. woman with a 16 y.o. son. Our eldery mother lives with us. I want to move out with just my son but my brother will be homeless if I do that.

Where in Marin County California can my brother get help finding employment? He tries so hard but with his inconsistent work history and with the fact he received his degree late in life no one wants to hire him. He currently works from time to time with a catering company but he has no money. I'm so worried about him and want to help.

I've offered him employment with the company I work for but he said he wants to do this on his own.

Please help. I don't know how to help him. I feel like I'm only enabling him. I love him so much and just want him to be happy and healthy.

Thank you.

Your brother first needs a counseling/psychiatric evaluation so he can get the medication he needs to stabilize his bipolar condition. Once his bipolar condition is under control - he will be able to handle the responsibility of a job. A community mental health agency in your area should be able to provide this help on a sliding scale. Also, if he will cooperates by taking the medication and getting counseling - he will be more likely to take care of his own needs.
The anger is a result of his underlying mental health condition - so that must be treated first.
