Hi, I'm new to this site. My husband of 26 years has always been a drinker, but he almost killed himself from it last week. He was committed to psych lockdown unit for the last 11 days and has gone through detox. He's on depression med now. He will be discharged from the lockdown unit tomorrow but the committal will stay in effect until he completes outpatient therapy. He thinks he doesn't need this, but can quit on his own. I've contacted a neighbor who is an AA leader to come and talk to him over the weekend since he won't start his classes till Monday. Any suggestions on what to do or what to expect as he goes through his treatment program?

Good luck. The most important thing you can do for yourself and your husband is to attend some Alanon meetings. You will learn from people who have been through what you are going through.
To recover, your husband must admit that he is powerless over alcohol, in other words he does not know what he will do when he starts drinking. Alanon teaches the 3 C's--you did not cause it, you can't control it, and you can't cure it.
Good Luck,
Jim S
