Alcohol = Social?

Postby Im too Blue » Mon Sep 10, 2007 12:36 am

Hey, I have always been rather shy not very out going. I can be with people i know for a day have a couple drinks and talk to them like i knew them forever. I feel as if alcohol is like my way out of shyhood and my light to becoming a social butterfly. Does this make sense?

Perfect sense. Alcohol is called the great social lubricant for good reason. And for people who can drink it safely, it is a good thing.

Yeah, it works for a while is a social setting, but obviously and unfortunately after a few too many, disastrous circumstances may occur... i.e. offering too much information and unwanted advances etc.

Too many folks use alcohol as a mask.

Darkmeat, that ain’t the half of it…

If it were just a case of running off at the mouth in a bar, it could be laughed off.

But I am an alcoholic, and I take an AA meeting into a local detox once a week. In there, one can see the real cost of that social lubricant for some of us. Most people never become alcohol dependant, but somewhere around 7% of the population do. And it isn’t pretty. Alcohol kills! Mostly it doesn’t, but tell that to someone who is drinking two quarts of vodka a day just to function. They know they are fighting a losing battle.

This is just my guess, but when someone posts a question here, they are worried about their alcohol consumption. They may be part of that 7% and they may not, but never the less they need the facts.

Richard,

Well, running off at the mouth (to the wrong people) can certainly get you in a whole lot of trouble. Guess it depends how aggressive the delivery is, and a good portion of folks liquored up, come on very strong and /or obnoxious.

Somehow 7 percent seems rather low for alcohol dependency, but might depend if you're talking strictly physical. Yes, two quarts of vodka a day would safely kill in relatively a short time frame.

"This is just my guess, but when someone posts a question here, they are worried about their alcohol consumption."…

That could be, but either way, but it's education for all of us and don't hold it against the author's character.
