I hope that things are working out better for you this time around. I know that the conventional wisdom in AA is stopping alcohol completely and moving on from there, but maybe in this way you can say good-bye to it more gradually.
When I stopped completely after 18 years of daily drinking (many days I don't remember how they ended), I was in a state of panic. With the sedation effect of alcohol removed, I was just plain crazy.
The Sinclair method would probably not have worked for me as I was out of control and never knew what would happen once I started drinking. I had no desire to control my intake from the start. In the end, I drank alone.
Stay in touch with your doctor with any side-effects and progress. Let us know how you are doing.
Best of luck to you. :D

Thanks Wally. The Naltrexone is allowing me to avoid overindulging while I taper, which is very helpful for me. I think I only need a few more days of drinking a few ounces a day to complete the taper. I don't want to put my body through withdrawal.

AA is not for me. If I choose to go to meetings, I will go to LifeRing. However, I don't think they would approve of the Sinclair method at LifeRing either. I want to be completely dry for at least 3 days before I go to any meetings so I can be totally honest and avoid criticism. I feel the most resonance with the harm reduction philosophy but there are no meetings of that kind in my area that I know of.

I reached out to my doctor (PCP) about quitting and her reaction to my method was very negative and condescending. She insisted that the only way to quit is immediate, permanent abstinence and AA and that I'm just "kidding myself" with any other method. A typical response from the medical community that I'm very tired of. It just makes me want to take a shot and tell her to go ###$ herself.
