Just Sayin' Hi!

Postby Taryn » Tue May 22, 2007 1:23 pm

I found this board yesterday and, after reading through many posts I could relate to, I thought I'd say hi and introduce myself. So...hi! My name is Taryn and I'm an alcoholic, joining you all from the UK. My recovery has been very "stop-start" over the last twelve months, which is when I first decided to quit drinkin' - the most I managed was three months sober, back in 2006. I am really, really hoping that this time I am doing all the "right" things, because I know that I couldn't carry on the way I was. Currently, I'm taking Campral which helps with cravings, and I recieve addiction counselling once a week. I'm on day four today...that's four miracles in a row as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks for having me here - I look forward to getting to know you all.

Welcome. There are several of us recovering alcoholics here with many years of soberity. I almost lost my life due to alcohol and other drugs. Now my life is beyond my wildest dreams.

Taryn…
Welcome! 4 days, like I said to Tim and Delaney, that is a long time to go without the benefit of a drink or two to take the edge off.

I hope you are doing the “Right things” as well. Alcohol is a subtle foe, it has a way of re insinuating itself into our lives even when we don’t want it to.

My suggestion on doing it “Right” is find an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting and make yourself a part of it. 90 meetings in 90 days, that is what they told me. Arm yourself against it with what you will learn there.

And again, welcome
Richard

Thank you both for the welcome!

Richard, I actually forgot to mention in my first post that I am attending meetings, and working with a sponsor. Unfortunately, I can't make meetings as regularly as I'd like to since I live in a very remote area, but I am working towards changing that also (I am beginning driving lessons again ASAP - when I have more sober time and have learnt to trust myself a little more).

As someone told me in my first meeting, there is a big difference between being 'unable' and 'unwilling' -- I am more than willing! The actual time it takes me to get to a meeting now (around two hours) isn't an obstacle for me, but the financial costs are enourmous. To put it into perspective, it costs me most of my weeks wages to travel to and from one single meeting by taxi. Occasionally, I'm able to get a lift, which ups the number of meetings I attend to two/three a week.

I remember my first meeting well, surprisingly; it really changed my outlook. I walked in suicidal and came out with more hope than I knew what to do with. Words honestly can't do justice in describing the relief and sense of belonging I felt there.

Again, thank you both for your warm welcome!

I look forward to learning and sharing with you all,
-Tar

Taryn…

That is good news about you finding that meeting so helpful and full of hope. My experience was much the same.

I don’t know the circumstances, but maybe someone in that meeting lives near you, and can share the ride, maybe you and they could split the gas. Ask around at the next opportunity. We want to be helpful.

And keep coming back, that is what they told me.
