Re: Help

Hope is what I needed too when I was at my lowest, and I got it and it was... true, don't have a better word for it. At NA we say "don't leave before the miracle happens". I was close, um, to evacuating myself from this planet a few times. And then shortly afterwards the miracle would happen and I would be so happy I waited.

Big hugs – do you think the fact that being in Korea helps so much means that your "normal" location is what triggers the addiction, and if yes, would it be possible for you to change location permanently in some way?

Right now I don't think It's possible to stay here permanently. Maybe in a couple of years. I feel like I'm seeing the world in a new perspective so I've decided to photograph these moments.

I didn't necessarily mean here. Just somewhere else than you are "normally" based. How long do you think you can be in Korea?

One of the most important things in overcoming addiction is discovering your triggers and I think you just bumped into a big one, so that's why I am asking. For me one of the biggest was my burnout at work and when I was finally forced to leave the job it did me a world of good.

I made a lot of changes when I started my recovery , some small , some large . I think that looking hard at my life and seeing things in relation to my addiction and habits made me realize how limited my life had become , tied to those old routines , places and people .

I definitely started backing away from certain friendships , because the only thing we had in common was gambling . Once I quit , they really weren't interested in spending time with me .

I surrounded myself instead with people who were living the way I wanted to .

I will be here in Korea for about 2 months, I didn't know going abroad could help me this much. Just like you the pressure of work and the death of my mother was the trigger for my addiction.

Hi Robert !

good to hear from you . I'm glad that you're doing well . It's remarkable what a change of routine can do . I'm so sorry for your loss . That's a very hard thing to go through .

Keep in touch , OK ? And enjoy every moment !

RobertM:

I'm also an alcoholic. I know how hard it can be at times. What has helped me the most is learning to live my life one day at a time. Today I choose not to drink. I will focus on what needs to be done today. Hope this helps a little. I wish you the best!

Sometimes when cravings are very bad I live an hour at a time, or five minutes. I will not drink for the coming five minutes. Then five minutes later I decide not to drink for the next five minutes. And at some point it's time to go to bed. This is one of the most important things NA taught me.
