im not an alcoholic.. but..

Postby Cohen » Tue Feb 13, 2007 6:19 pm

Im not an alcoholic.. but i abused alcohol for a while.. (an occasionally still do)... at my college christmas ball, i was drinking vodka before the party even started.. and blacked out more than once.. I try to curb it.. but i have an undiagnoses mood disorder that i need to sort out .. and sometimes i feel solace in drinking.

You say you are not an alcoholic, but you have the behavior of an alcoholic. Blackouts, where you do not remember what you did, are considered by most experts as a good sign of alcoholism. Drinking before a party is another good sign. But whom do you want to believe, experts or yourself.

You know you could have a mood disorder and be an alcoholic. I'm bipolar, alcoholic, and I have ADD.
Good Luck,

Beccy… only you can diagnose yourself, somebody else’s opinion of what you are or not is of no value. But when you do look at your relationship with alcohol, be completely honest with yourself.

Like Jim said, mood disorders and problems with alcohol do present themselves simultaneously on occasion.

Here is one of my favorite tests for alcoholism:
What is your favorite alcoholic drink? The one you really like?
Well, get yourself a big helping of that drink and do this experiment.
Drink two decently sized shots/glasses/highballs whatever of it, and then stop! Not another drop for 24 hours. Do it again tomorrow, two drinks then nothing more for the rest of the day.
Do it every day for a week.

A real alcoholic will have a hell of a time pulling that off. After one or two, the phenomenon of craving sets in and we want more. We say, screw the experiment, I want to get as drunk as I can right now.

Come back here and tell us how the experiment went. Remember Beccy, rigorous honesty is the key.

Thanks for that piece of advice Richard.. tbh I don't think I am an alcoholic because I've not drunk for ages at a time.. and yesterday Ihad a beer and didn't feel the need to drink again.. but however I did say to someone that I had intended to get drunk of vodka in the morning.. but i'm going out instead so I cannot carry out this plan..

I think you should attend to your mood disorder first before getting into your alcohol problem.

I went to AA and it fixed my alcohol problem, my mood problems, and all my other problems. It would not hurt you to sit in on a few meetings as just a visitor. But, you may be afraid of what you might hear.
Good Luck,
