Worried my Agoraphobia is getting the best of me

Postby bipolarmom » Sun Apr 18, 2010 7:03 pm

I have always had problems with anxiety but it wasn't until my early 20's that I noticed a real fear of being in public. I was doing ok for a while but now in part because a psychiatrist I was seeing reduced my meds drastically and in part due to stress I am virtually housebound. I am terrified at the idea of even going to the corner store and use every excuse not to leave the house. This of course is a problem under normal circumstances but right now it's even more of a problem becuase I am a student and I have a final on Wednesday. I am worried that I will be unable to attend and unable to get a dr's note to verify that since I am so worked up about going. I'm so worked up about going that I'm having trouble even studying. I really don't know what to do at this point.

Heya,

Do you live with anyone else? I think that the final on Wednesday should be a priority for now. Could yuo ask someone you know to help you make it to it?; and then be there when it finishes to take you back? You really should try to make it, and you could be very proud afterwards that you managed to get out of the house. I believe that you must call your doctor too to tell him/her what has happened. You don't have to live in this way, bipolarmom, and there IS a way out of this. Take a deep breath and start on the road out of this. Don't be afraid to ask for help of those around you too.

Well normally my husband would be here to kinda hold my hand but he is currently going to school himself a couple hours away. this year has been extrmemly tough becuase of that. And becuase of my agoraphobia I don't really have any friends to speak of. I am relatively new to the city I live in because I only moved here for the school I am going to. I am also worried because the agoraphobia has seemed to peak even to the point that I missed my drs appointment on friday becuase I couldnt bear outside.

Well, there are ways to straighten this out for now. For starters, telephone the doctor and let him/her know what happened. All of this will not go away unless you start taking control of the situation. I know that it's daunting but you can do it. Telephone him/her and see what the advice is. I really think you should make a huge push for this final on wednesday too. Would your husband be able to help you in any shape or form?

In the long term, I think it's about making baby steps. For example, open your front door and take a longlook outside. Then, close the door. Try it again the following day and maybe you will feel able to step out onto the porch to take a look around. Eventually, maybe you can walk to the gate, etc.
