Is it considered Trichotillomania?

Postby smalltownlassie » Thu Mar 22, 2018 3:49 am

Hello everyone.

It's my first time posting on a psych forum.

I am a 20 year old woman, I would consider myself fairly anxious in general, for no apparent reason. In the last few months, I've found myself being extremely moody and developing some habits that I find concerning.

I've started pinching my skin in stressful situations, as well as over plucking. I've been plucking for quite a long time (often too much, leaving a good 2 inches between my eyebrows, ahah!) but I started being more intense.

I pluck/tweeze my eyebrows, my eyelashes, my pubic area and the area around my bellybutton. I pluck a lot, and I can't seem to be able to restrain myself.

Would that be considered trichotillomania? If so, what can I do? Do I need to consult a psy?

Thank you.

Welcome Smalltownlassie !

If this behavior is causing you concern , that is reason enough to consult a professional . There are healthier ways to deal with stress and anxiety that don't involve doing things to your body for relief .

Changing an unhealthy compulsion takes a lot of effort and work but it's not impossible . A good therapist can help you find the tools and methods to achieve that . I hope you can find some way to regain control over the impulse and develop better alternatives .
