Is this a tic attack?

Postby Tesbabe » Thu Jun 01, 2017 9:36 pm

My friends son (11years old) has had tics for a few years very mild, and until recently we didn't know they were tics until they worsened. Being send to ear nose and thoat doctors about snorting and sniffing and bing given antihistamines when the results came back clear. "It's alligies" we were told. Over the last couple of months his tic went from sniffing and hair flicking to lots of arm and leg movements too. He is awaiting an appointment with a neurologist. So no official diagnosis of Tourette's yet, but it's what we are expecting. He has both motor and vocal ones, having too many to list motor ones but until today his vocal ones were mostly sniffing, with the occasional strange cough/laugh and a woot woo sound.
Today for the first time the F word came out. Later that day on walking the dog he started to tic loads more than normal, with loads of new motor and vocal tics he hasn't done before. Starting with f'ing dog, then walking past a man f... f... f'ing old man. Embarrassed he covered his mouth and put his head inside his t-shirt. F'ing over and over until he was home when it got a whole lot worse. Saying many swear words along with other things like Jamaican goat, abusing the curtain and other odd words that made little sense. Also clicking mouth noises and a noise like a cock a doodle doo. As well as new motor tics like punching the wall, clicking fingers and giving the middle finger. Mostly it was all vocal which is not "normal" for him.
From looking at videos on YouTube tic attacks seem to be mostly motor but this was the opposite. Could this have been a tic attack? It lasted about an hour and half of tic on tic on tic with little to no rest.
He has never experienced anything like that before, but there seems to be new tics everyday recently.
Are there any ways of calming him if this happens again?
Any advice or thoughts welcomed

Sounds like it. They change over time getting worse with anxiety. Maybe they're under a lot of pressure lately or maybe they have more anxiety lately which can make them worse for my son. Good they are going to the doc soon, they should be able to tell you whats going on.
