Oxytocin: Is this an option for Major Depression?

Postby Dusterly » Sun Apr 06, 2014 1:18 am

Hello, and thanks for the opportunity to post a question about medication.

Lately on the web there have been discussions, some scientific, about the hormone Oxytocin. There are suggestions that it may be helpful in treating various mental disorders including Depression, PTSD, and ADHD among others.

I checked to see if there are any natural forms of this hormone within herbs, other supplements, or foods. The information seemed to be from secondary sources, and businesses interested in selling a natural nasal spray [expensive] to introduce or synergize this hormone.

The supplement information seemed too vague.

Is there any validity to the claim that this hormone can help mental disorders?

Thank you!

I'm sure all research is preliminary. My understanding is that the big problem with Oxytocin as a therapy is that there's no long-acting form. I think the nasal spray - which I thought was just available for research uses - lasts 15 min or something like that.
